Nvidia announce console beating chip for mobile devices

Who cares? Touch screens are fine for Angry Birds, not so much for anything even remotely complex control wise. Max Payne for example is just horrific on a touch screen, and GTA has many frustrating moments control wise as well. As soon as you start adding on peripherals or hooking your tablets up with a controller you might as well buy a dedicated handheld console or a home console.

The vita is built on a bog standard mobile phone CPU and GPU, imagine if MS released a console with this hardware in it?

Although, NVidia ALWAYS big up their mobile platforms, which are always turds. e.g. the Tegra platform.

If the technology is as good as they say it is then it's an exciting prospect, maybe the next generation of dedicated handheld consoles will be able to put out some seriously graphically impressive games.

As for mobiles and tablets I don't really see it happening though. Most games on the app stores are what, between 50p up to a few quid? I'm sure that if this technology is to be properly taken advantage of then games will need to become more complex on the mobile platform which will no doubt drive development costs up. Would the companies involved still be happy when they can only sell their games for a few quid at most?

Any higher than that and I doubt many sales would be made at all simply due to the fact that I'm guessing the vast, vast majority of people who play games on the mobile platform are casual players who aren't really interested in shelling out X amount for a game they deem too complicated when they can just go back to Candy Crush for free.

If the games don't become more complex then all we are left with are graphically updated versions of the mainly shallow gameplay experiences that already grace the App Store/Play Store.

Not to mention the fact that games that will take advantage of this type of processing power probably won't be the sorts of games we can play in two or three minute blasts.

Lost count of how many times I've heard this claim over the years, I hate the whole tablet/mobile gaming craze, one of the knock on effects of it is "true" mobile games consoles are losing out to platforms with loads of cheap, short lived games (how many kids asked for iPads or phones for Xmas opposed to ds or vita?)

Nvidia have made ludicrous claims re: their mobile chips , before. Will take with a pinch of salt until demonstrated.
Also, ARM have smashed anything Nvidia have announced with a superior chip with similar/ shortly after release dates in previous years, will probably happen again.

Had nvidia had there chips in the new consoles they wouldn't be saying all this, it all sounds like sour grapes to me, we hear this every year: console quality gaming on mobile devices

All that power to play a 2D 8 bit platformer yay. I know there is games on phones and tablets that do look great nowadays but most people that play games on a mobile phone or tablet are casual gamers.

I wonder if this power improves video editing and photo editing on tablets.
