I am thinking of replacing my 8800gtx with a 4870 but i am worried about driver conflicts. Ive only ever had nvidia cards in this system and don't want any remaining drivers to conflict with the new ati ones. Whats the best way to 100% wipe the pc of the old nvidia drivers?

uninstall your nvidia drivers using the normal uninstall utility, then run this:
