Nvidia card required - not an 8800

OP has a dual core CPU, you don't.

I started a thread about 8800 PSU requirements couple of weeks back and tbh there was fair few people running them along with dual cores on 380 to 480w psu's. :)

Thanks for all the replies.

This all started out as a stop gap AGP upgrade 6800GT - X1950pro on an ABIT BE7

Short version - it did not work and already sold old card.

So cheap option was the Asrock (sold the P4 for a good price) and then with PCIe available the X1950XT which is not as reliable as I would like.

WRT to the PSU I cannot overclock the C2D (the X1950XT goes to full on artefact mode!)

He'll have to buy a new board. He could have just bought a decent board in the first place.

You are totally missing the point of the ASrock board.

It's for people who can't afford a new mobo (Chaning socket, or wanting Core2 support), mem (DDR >> DDR2), and graphics (AGP >> PCI-E) all in one go.

So instead the ASrock is used as a stepping stone, it lets you move to the Core2 platform while alowing you to continue running your old DDR and AGP graphics from your previous system, and the board only costs ~£35, so its not like you are wasting loads of cash by getting one, end of the day if you sell it on at the end for £20 you've only lost £15 in the process.

Then when you have the cash you change the mem to DDR2, then move to PCI-E, then jump to a good Core2 board.

Like I say, a great stepping stone board and does everything it says on the tin.

If you google though the 8800 cards will throttle down if they aint got enough juice going in so on a lower psu the card may not be running at its true potential.

A 'good' graphics card, other than the 8800GTS, is the Gainward BLISS 7900GS 512MB.

Those cards, check out the reviews, can be clocked with ease to the GT speeds and seems to be just as fast.

I was VERY tempted myself but in the end decided that the 'better' option for me was to spend that little bit more and get the 8800GTS as it should last longer ;)

Dont need to google thanks but yes thats true, however most of the people who posted did have very good 3dmark scores sitting within sig - so lays major dought in claims of 600w PSU required by Nvidia. Many factors come into play though such as extra drives attached to PC and so on... ;)

I get 12.5K in 05 with everything in stock which seems quite good to me on a single core - non oc cpu. Only scores higher on single core are heavily overclocked Opteron's and FX's.

Not bad at all :D.

This is what I get with the speeds in my sig. Mind you this is from last year (august). I gave up with the overclocking of my x1900 after a few hours and got down to some gaming as I was getting bored.

If you are, like me, restricted to a single slot card, the Wait for the 8600 GTS - they will offer excellent perofrmance, are DX10 capable AND will be pretty cheap....
