Nvidia drivers causing GPU to stop responding?

This type of thread is so rare that the ATI trolls are quick to pounce, it's just a shame they're nowhere to be seen when their fellow ATI users need help with Catalysts.

I should have just taken a note out of Kyle's book and blamed user error. ;)

Well it would not happen if some users here didn't keep claiming that NV drivers have no problems & still seem to keep claiming even when a NV problem is on the first page of the gfx section.

And for user error just to prove a point i decide to use the latest Driver Sweeper to see if it would break something & it has as now i can not install Cat 10.5 hotfix which i had no issues with installing before i used Driver Sweeper, Cat 10.5 will install, but everything upto 10.9a will not install so Driver Sweeper has screwed something.
System restore time.

I've got the same.

My investigation didn't enlighten me regarding to the solution, but rather ensured me there's something wrong with drivers.
I use SLI since long time, but Win 7 x64 since 6-7 months. I've seen "drivers stopping" message before, but it was always caused by some specific action and was easy to fix (like high GPU temps = lowering temps, old drivers = install new drivers, messy drivers = cleaning the system & reinstall drivers etc). Most of those appeared during intensive GPU usage, like gaming.

I started to suffer this issue couple months ago and unfortunately, I haven't noticed which update caused this (I update players, codecs, drivers when they just release in newer version). Most likely it arose once I've reinstalled nVidia drivers.

In this case (and in my case) drivers stop working & respawn when video action is taken. When I doubleclick on any movie icon - I'm almost sure the drivers will stop responding. It's not any players issue as I've checked plenty of them... I've changed even default player to BestPlayer as it can handle hangups easily, unlike MediaPlayerClassic/HC which requires hard reset. Maybe it's a codec (Shark 7 codecs + x64 components) issue which hangs some driver's component - I have no idea. As far as I remember the same was with K-Lite codecs which I removed and replaced with Shark. But unique is that once drivers stop working & respawn - I'm able to open any movie with no further hangup... until system restart, of course. I have had no such behaviour always - it started couple months ago, as I said. And about one month ago I've noticed the same with some YT movies (Adobe Flash). Never ever I've had it with games - games, benchmarks, temp testers are fine.

Reason why I think they are drivers - under WinXP, or Linux (Mandriva 2010.1 x32, 2010.1 x64, Ubuntu 10.10 beta x64) everything is fine - movies, Flash....

I'm afraid it might be next "memory leak" in x64 Windows 7. Previous "memory leak" made me to sell Audigy card which can't afford microphone support, as most of you probably know (see Audigy & Audigy 2 mic issue with x64 Windows 7 & 4 or more RAM memory).

Just to update, the errors became more frequent in the last few days to the point where I was getting BSOD's indicating 'BUGCODE USB' and 'MEMORY MANAGEMENT.'

I took out all my USB peripherals and the BSOD's disappeared.

In the last day or two since using the front panel USB ports, I've not had one BSOD.

I still get the GPU driver not responding but it is definitely more stable. This leads me to believe my motherboard is on the out.

I will be buying a cheap ATi card this week, so will update later.

If I have the same problem with it, I plan to get a new motherboard.

That USB thing sounds rather strange, did you install any new USB device recently or has it got worse on its own?

Also, is your GPU sharing an IRQ with anything? it will tell you in device manager if you go to view > resources by type > IRQ, I wonder if your motherboard has a few conflicting IRQ's.

I'd be not so sure if mobo causes such behaviour (i've got 2xGTS250, so frankly it's the repacked 9800GTX+, and as I wrote, I suffer this error randomly under Win7x64 when I start to watch movie only). But - of course - if you check new mobo, please do some feedback here how it goes :)

You are spot on!

I just checked and the graphics card is sharing an IRQ with the Standard AHCI1.0 Serial ATA controller!

Will have to do some research as to how to change IRQ's as the last time I did that was with XP and even then I can't remember how to do it.

Will do.

What controller is that? it might be worth first trying to install the proper manufacturers AHCI driver instead of using the generic Windows one.

Ah, it's still causing the GPU driver problem even when I disable that controller.

Bummer, I'm all out of ideas then I suppose you probably just have a faulty card.

So do I have 2 faulty cards, too ? And rest people that randomly suffer this issue either ?
I don't think so, but it's true that not all nVidia users experience that.

As the OP, just giving a quick update.

Bought a HD5450 and still getting the video card not responding error. I'm using Catalyst 10.9 drivers.

It's without a doubt the motherboard now. Still getting BUGCODE USB BSOD's and the network adapter only works half the time.

Another quick update. I bought a Gigabyte G41M-Combo motherboard and every problem I had before has gone.

Case closed for me.

I sometimes get this as well when having fah gpu client in the background or even just opening a video. Tried the latest 258 whql and 260 beta. Both are the same.
