Hi

If i run glxgears i get this:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

I am running Ubuntu Edgy kernel 2.6.17-10-generic.

I have Nvidia-glx installed (1.0.9625+2.6.17.5-10¬amaranth)
and Nvidia-Kernal-common 20051028+1ubuntu6
and i have rebooted

my xorg.conf looks like this

The actual Nvidia driver has it's own DRI module built-in, so you should comment out the Load "dri" line in this section

From what I can see at first glance, that's the only bits you've missed
 
I recently upgraded a work machine to Edgy ands I'm, having the same issue. I', 100% positive I've commented out the correct lines per nVidia's release info. I am also 100% sure the I'm using "nvidia" rather than "nv". Any further errrors becasue I get the same glxgears error?

i changed nv to nvidea and it works

didn't change the other bit though but all seems fine

now have my Beryl/AIGLX working fine :)

This was installed by the Automatix script but when I discovered that glxgears didn't work I installed manually to see if that would fix it. It didn't.

When I run glxgears I get the following error:

shot in the dark, but in the "Modules" section try adding

failing that, get the edgy automatix script and try the drivers off that :)
 
I added "dri" and I have the same symptoms. I see the nVidia splash screen when X starts but I get no hardware OpenGL acceleration. This system worked when I was running Dapper.

As stated above, letting Automatix do the work was my first action. It left me with the same issue I currently have.

sorry I can't be much help, the only other thing I cna think of is that your X screen is running on something other than 0:0, thus GLX is unable to attach itself to it?
 
I cannot remember, and i'm not near a linux machine now to find out :(

All I know is that my laptop (ATI) runs on display "1" for some reason.

Google for XGL and Compiz, they usually discuss displays and whatnot.
 
Have you checked lspci ?

Check the options for lspci to get verbose and/or device listing. Can't remember it off hand.

Remove the BusID line from your xorg.conf, you only need that if you have more than one GFX device.

This is what mine looks like for a 6600GT:

I found this one in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There's quite a bit here. I don't know if all these errors are normal or if they are evidence of a problem as I don't frequently dig through my xorg log.

The log was too big to post on the forum so I threw in on the web. Tell me what you think.
