Hi there, when you say 3D, do you want 3D for 3D movies like Blu-ray 3D or do you want to play modern games in 1080p 3D on that LG monitor?

If it is the former then you will need a graphics card like this and the Nvidia 3D Vision kit.

If it is the latter then you will also need the Nvidia 3D vision kit and I would strongly recommend investing in a more powerful card (like the GTX 570 at least) as playing games in 3D more than halves the framerates.

3d movies and some gaming.i got the money my 3d vision kit and blu-ray only got l£120 left for a gpu.that first link you show me was for a ati card and my 3dtv dont support ati 3d.

Ah, if you only have £120 and already have the LG monitor then I guess you are somewhat locked in.

Personally, I would spend the extra on a GTX 560 Ti like this if at all possible as it is a much more powerful card than a GTX 550 Ti and for playing games in 3D you really need all the power you can get (see this review which compares the two cards in games).

The first card you linked to (the GTX 550 Ti) does have a dual-link DVI port - hence why it is advertised as supporting 3D Vision. However, I wouldn't say it is powerful enough to play modern games in 1080p in 3D and make them look good.

thanks for the reply mate i could go down this route my set is

monitor 1, LG W2363D 23" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LCD
monitor 2,IIyama Prolite E2472HD 24" Widescreen LED Monitor
pc 1,quad core qx6850,4gb ddr3,onboard vga (use for burning and web use)
pc 2,i5 4.4ghz,4gb ddr3,crossfire 5850(gaming only)

i got about £300,£170 for 3d vision kit and blu-ray player, left with £120 for gpu,get a extra £40 for GTX 560 Ti and put in pc 1 for 3d movies and some 3d gaming.

or sell crossfire 5850 and get
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580 WINDFORCE 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card and put in pc 2
but does the gtx580 run better then my crossfire 5850?also the main game i will be playing is bf3

Hi Chris, I just checked and was surprised that 5850CF is a bit faster than a single 580GTX... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/303?vs=305. Bear in mind as cmndr_andi says when using Nvidia 3D Vision your Gfx card has to render each frame twice. This would mean that a single 580GTX in 3D mode would only manage about half the frame rate as your current setup!

I used 3D Vision on my 460GTX and that struggled though was quite useable if you turned the effects down. For me I loved the 3D effect and so was happy to reduce settings to run with it. But I'd say that a 560TI is the minimum for 3D Vision. If you want to game, especially BF3 then I think you have to sell your 5850s. So:-

560 Ti single
+ good value
- you'll have to turn settings/resolution down quite a lot
- if you've got used to CF5850s then it'll feel slow especially in 3D

SLI 560 Ti -
+ faster and cheaper than 1 580GTX
- only 1GB of RAM which for BF3 and future games may not be enough.
- will use more power than a 580

GTX 580 3GB
+ loads of VRAM which is nice
+ will provide *adequate* 3D performance from a single card
- expensive!

How much can you sell the 5850s for?

My only other idea would be to get a single GTX570 - this will be cheaper, have more VRAM than SLId 560s but will not be quite as fast. You could try this for a while and still have the option of getting a 2nd 570 for SLI later if you want more speed. 570 SLI would be the same cost as a 3GB 580 and would be a lot faster too.

EDIT: to answer your original question, it's not 2 DVI ports you need for 3D, it's dual-link DVI - almost all cards have this. Dual link uses more pins and has higher bandwidth so it can do 1920x1080 120s time a second instead of the usual 60.

OP, does your system have the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4 motherboard?

If it does you're OK for SLI if you go down that route.

If it isn't that motherboard then check for SLI compatability.
