Nvidia GF104 goes for high frequency with 256 shaders

Currently hard to find any published meaningful results on 400 series SLI v 5800 CF, the Guru3D ones are a tad inconsistant and the hardwarecanucks while not bad results wise isn't using the best or latest of drivers.

To be fair if they swap leads in specific titles based on driver sets, then I think it is fair to say that they are pretty neck and neck. Arguing that one is better on x,y,z driver which then gets trumped by the competitor on a new driver is just painful. In this scenario you will never have meaningful results - especially as driver releases for ATI are monthly and a decent review with a vast array of benchmarks may take several weeks to write.

So, what exactly were you basing your original comments on? Some top secret NV ones or something? :p

Very interesting, seems to move them more towards ATI's idea of smaller dies at higher frequencies.

Take the following with a pinch of salt, of course we dont what the final specs will be:

So 256 cores at 900mhz compared to 480 cores at 700mhz so very roughly the GF104 has ~69% the performance of GTX480.

So GTX490 (2xGF104), given a 70% sli scaling factor, would be ~117% the performance of a GTX480.

Techpowerup reports the 5970 is 128% the performance of a GTX480@1920x1200 so I suppose GTX490 wont be faster than the 5970

dont forget he is using old drivers (9.12)

Right, so you've directly compared 5850cf with 470sli and can confidently say;

GTX470 in SLI does beat the 5850 in CF in many if not all cases

....even though the professional reviewers suggest otherwise?

yup at the normal kind of settings that most people play at i.e. 1680x1050 and 1920x with 4 or 8x AA the GTX470 in SLI generally has a comfortable lead over 5850 CF.

I am enclined to believe the reviews myself. Not that I don't believe you you Roff, Its just you are very clearly bias towards NV and I would like to actually see some results rather than just take your word for it.

On another note I have also played with both the 470 and the 5850 non CF and could bearly tell the difference.

GTX470 single is rather unspectacular but in SLI it does come alive. Unfortunatly I don't get paid at work to make reviews and they won't let me bring a few cards home :(

It is a shame that these things arn't updated on a more regular basis. Like you say a lot of these reviews are outdated which makes buying a little tricky.

Yeah especially with the 256+ drivers shaking up SLI performance/support and no doubt AMD/ATI will roll out some drivers to counter that.
