Nvidia GTX 780 6Gb cards

Hi all, I'm after some well informed advice. Currently I game across 3 screens at a resolution of 5760 x 1080 with the following setup

i5 2500k @4.5ghz
MSI Nvidia GTX780 Twin Frozr/Gaming
8Gb RAM
MSI Z68A-GD55 motherboard

At the moment the 780 is struggling to play some games at high detail and in some cases is hitting the 3Gb Vram limit. So I'm considering the following options

1) Buy a single 780 6Gb version and SLI it with my current card and eventually sell the 3Gb one and buy a 6Gb replacement once prices drop in the future. I'm assuming the 2 different memory sizes will be ok together but will only utilise 3Gb.

2) Bite the bullet and buy 2 6Gb cards at a price of £800 and sell the 3Gb card on (not sure what I'd get for it?).

Next question is which card to go for? I'm drawn to the KFA2 HOF or the Inno3d iChill. Both cost the same.

Thoughts and opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I don't think you can SLI cards with different amounts of VRAM.

There was an old way around this (Coolbits?) but I've no idea if it still works.

Edit:

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

No point even trying it as the OP will still be left with 3gb of VRAM which is what is causing the problem.

Best to go with two 6gb cards and sell the 3gb one.

Thanks for the input so far. I really want to get the 2 6Gb cards now but my wallet's telling me no! But I suppose that's what credit cards are for :D

Any thoughts on which brand is better? KFA2 or Inno3d? Also what sort of price would be a fair one for a 2nd hand MSI 780 Gaming?

So OcUK would deal with the RMA with the Inno3d cards? Would that mean a quick turnaround?

I've read on another forum that KFA2 use better components whilst Inno3d just use reference components. Leaning towards KFA2 for that reason.

You would need to contact OCUK to know for sure.
As a few posts above, my HIS 7950s started rattling after 7-8months, contacted OCUK who got it returned to HIS instead of me dealing directly with them, not sure what happens after the 28days have passed, whether I get a full refund/similar item price/performance wise.

I think for sli reference coolers are cooler than none reference ones, Someone with 2 of them might advise you better than I can as I only have 1 inno3d 780 :)

If he plays bf4 or plants vs zombies that is true, If he doesn't only play those games then it's less money for less performance.

Across three screens in single card format a mildly overclocked 290 will match or exceed the performance of a mildly overclocked 780 in more than just those two games.

Performance aside however I find Surround to be better day to day for triple screen gaming / using the system normally than Eyefinity. The latest drivers are giving me all sorts of weird profile "bugs" which simply dont' have on Nvidia's side (they don't use profiles in the same manner).

Make sure you report these problems to Warsam Owen so it can get fixed in the next driver. :)

A colleague of mine has 2 290 Tri-X on 6 Screens. Believe me I was that close to convert to his setup. And he hasn't overclocked them.

6x 720/1080/1440/4k res screens?
Come on man, give us numbers, its all good with quantity of screens, but in the end its all about res and fps :p

The inno3ds epic cooler takes up more than one slot and that could be the case with the Hof from the looks of it. Just keep that in mind cause I'm sure the MSI gaming is just dual slot.
