NVIDIA Hybrid SLI

This sounds pretty cool. If it notably cuts power consumption and can quickly switch from the integrated GPU to the main GPU and vice versa, I'd be all for it. Cutting the powerbill is always a good thing.

Sounds very interesting. But what does this actually mean, just that we save more on out electricity bill and help the environment? :D

That's what it looks like. Tech companies have to be seen to be going "green". Though I can see this would be more aimed at the pre-built machines i.e. Dell rather than at the enthusiast market (I would imagine its been pitched as hybrid in order to get enthusiasts to use NVidia boards rather than Intel boards).

Alien-ware did something like this in one of their laptops. They had a integrated chip and you could switch to a high end graphics card, but im not sure how well that technology worked.

Who knows who thought of it 1st (not same as announcing), its SLI 2 peeps want for better Scaling ;) (remember SLI is older than Crossfire and was an old tech from 3DFX).

Hopefully this, coupled with the new 9800gx2 will improve sli performance.

2 9800gx2s with one of these boards with Crisis on very high? Will be interesting to see the benches.

The methods and the abbreviation are completely different. 3dfx was Scan Line Interleave and Nvidia is Scaleable Link Interface.

3dfx Sli worked by having each gpu render an alternate horizontal (I think) line.

Nvidia Sli works by rendering alternate frames (AFR), splitting the frame into two and each card rendering a section (SFR). It can also work in AA mode which I believe is useful for CPU limited games and blends two images together.

Hmmmmmmm...

it works by plugging your monitor into the mobo gfx card and when you fire up a game the main card renders then transfers it to the on-board GPU.

Somehow I don't like that idea :/ If it doesn't limit performance then its all good but I think it will.

Sounds like the good old days when you'd have your Voodoo2 + some other card, with one connected to the other, then the Voodoo2 connected to your monitor.
