nvidia or amd card?

given the choice of a 7950 or a 670, I personally would go for the 670

given some of the end results I've seen on this forum from 7950 buyers vs. the results I've gotten from mine I would stick with the 670 if buying again now

IF you were buying a 670 over 7950, why wouldn't you buy the 7970? which is faster and same price or even cheaper

That is a bit of an odd one.

Though personally, I see absolutely no point in the 670 or 7970 at their prices, they're simply not worth the cost over a 7950.

my most recent 670 I got for £280, not sure how a 7970 is cheaper given that the equivalent 7970 is £330-350

edit; I just checked OCUK's current pricing on 670's... I agree, bit silly

Hi,
Thx for all the pointers...I eventually went for this card, Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC 3072MB
Reason: x2 DVI ports (my monitors are DVI only, res 1920 x 1200 (HDMI not suitable), would have to buy an adaptor for 'displayport to DVI'.
Will post update once card is in computer :-)

You wouldn't have needed a DP to DVI adapter, you could have used a DVI to HDMI cable. Plug the HDMI end in to the graphics card and the DVI end in to the monitor.

I've done this with a number of cards and displays, and works fine as long as the resolution is no higher 1920x1200.

The best bang for buck has to be a 670 imo. But if you're set on a 7950 or 680 then I would go with the 680.

7950 is not as powerful as the 670 but it's a big chunk cheaper. When overclocked it's actually pretty close to an overclocked 670 in most things.

680 is most powerful but it's absolutely horrible bang for buck compared to the 7950.

hhmm confusing...I rang OC and they said that via HDMI, the max was 1080, hence the change from ICEQ card...It would have also meant buying an adaptor.

Would a 7970 lightning not beat a 680, both oc'd? Originally I was looking at the msi 670 power edition but not so keen on it if its voltage can't be upped going forward following recent news from nvidia.

Some do some dont, nothing in it really, and price, likewise now, so basically pick your favourite team.

Although 680 lightning is £65 more, but other custom pcb's are available for less.

Hope mine does not take that long, told me 5-7 days

From what I understand is how it should be as OcUK are a premium partner with MSI (I don't think ANY other retailer in the UK has this!). This should allow OcUK to test in house and ship out a replacement asap. They then batch ship faulty items back to MSI rather than the traditional method of you ship to retailer, retailer ships to vendor etc...

Obviously if they don't have a replacement in stock it may take a little longer.

I had to RMA my MSI 7970 Lightning after 2 months usage. It took exactly 28 days from OCUK receiving my card to me getting the card back.

How long have you had the card? if it's within 28 days of purchase, they will test it and replace it, it's only after 28 days it will have to go to MSI itself.

Suprised his took 28 days, the MSI Rep even said a max of 14 days in another forum post about a year ago, but said can be as quick as a few days.

Maybe things have changed since?

Hope you get it sorted asap, I still haven't got my new rig setup yet, shocking I know! I'm just braiding my new Haf X case, can't stand bare wires on anything lol.

I'll have it done very soon and get clocking.
