NVIDIA Price-Cuts on GeForce GTX 460 and GTX 470 to Counter HD 6800 Threat

lol, yes guys, Nvidia are dropping prices out of the goodness of their hearts. Thats why the 10% larger with over 10% worse yields costing more to make 460gtx 1GB was sold 10-20% below a 5850, not because, thats the price they are competitive at.

AMD can't compete with the prices, in what world, its likely the 6850 is going to be 20-30% faster than a 460 768mb gtx, and be priced, 20-30% above it? Difference is AMD will make a killing at £150, Nvidia will make a large loss on 768mb 460's at £120.

Nvidia are being force to compete on price, IE dropping prices compared to how much slower the part is. Thats never bad SHORT TERM for the end user. Nvidia making 100mil + loss every quarter indefinately and being unable to make profit on gpu's is a MASSIVE problem long term.

What we need Nvidia to be doing is making those cards in such a way they can be price competitive and survive long term by being profitable.

It's definitely hurting NV to drop these prices but I suspect they can ride it out, or are hoping they can, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it.

Old news, very evident from the cuts that OCUK have already done.

Yep as already has been noticed OcUK acted on this price drop last night. :)

Not trolling at all then. Someone should be :o

Don't believe everything you read. Anyone who has worked in retail knows that you don't tell you customers about imminent price drops. You want them to buy now, not in a few days, weeks, months, whatever.

If you know about incoming price drops you keep quiet, or you deny it :p

Not saying that's true in this case, but you shouldn't necessarily believe these price drops are "the" price drops and that there won't be more still to come... however that does seem unlikely at this point.

^^^
Not sure how the above disproves anything...
OCUK probably receive credit notes to take into account price drops, hence they probably don't have to worry when they buy stock?

I wouldn't go that far. Although things may be different now, when I worked in a similar environment the disributors only gave credits in very restricted pre-planned situations. Most the time if you purchased stock and the price plummeted a week or so later it was tough luck (a bit like when us consumers buy stuff).

Some lines may be sale or return (usually software) in which case you could always return it but otherwise we had to be careful with low margin stock levels.

Nivida are going to give us a new bios that unlocks that disabled SM on the GTX 460s!

The masterplan is revealed!!!
