Nvidia Corp. not only plans to refresh its lineup of performance graphics accelerators this year, but also intends to introduce its 3-way SLI multi-GPU technology aiming extreme performance enthusiasts. But will the new triple SLI technology truly become a high-performance solution, or will share the destiny of Nvidia quad SLI?

According to a slide published by Expreview web-site, which is presumably from Nvidia Corp.’s roadmap, 3-way SLI is Nvidia’s new “ultimate gaming platform”, which will offer ultimate performance in three-dimensional games. ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, also plans to offer 3-way CrossFire multi-GPU technology, however, one of the graphics processing units (CPUs) in such configuration will be able to compute physics effects in case the game supports this capability.

Initially Nvidia plans to enable triple SLI support for the top-of-the-range GeForce 8800 GTX and Ultra graphics cards.

overkill a go go

tbh you have to be running on a res somewhere in the region of the size of the great wall of china to need that power.....some monkey is gonna buy 3 tho lol

So this new "ultimate" tech is nothing more than adding another connector to the sli bridge so one more card can sandwich its way in there and adjusting the drivers some to make use of it

OOOOH amazing.

The money spent on 3 cards is stupid...when compared to the performance of 1 top end card surely.
I doubt the performance gain will hardly be worth the money anyway... =/

Yay for dual configurations...NOT.

I got stung with 1900 Crossfire and vowed to never again touch dual configurations

i think you guys are missing the point.. it'll be good because u could buy 1 now then in a few months buy another much cheaper then a few months after buy another even cheaper....

its good for people who can't spend £200+ straight a way on a top card...

By that time your cards will be old.

Ok i can see if you get triple the performance if you have 3 cards but it does not work like that. Just like SLI at the moment, its not 2 GPU's, double the performance in games.

Pointless.

even 80% or 90% boost performance is still good...

some people only have £100 to spend on hardware every 2-3 months, they could buy 3 mid-rangs cards though 4-5months and they'll see better performance instead of 1 or 2 cards.

it isn't just about high end cards...

Yeah buy one now, then a few months down the line buy another, but then realise you cant as the next cards are out, and yours went out of production so theres none left. :D

Yeah buy 3x now, then a good few months down the line you find one of your cards packs up, but seen as the next gen is out, your cards out of production, so bang goes your Tri-SLi as theres none of your cards left, just like what happens with SLi now. :D
