NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

Would have made the 5090 a tough sell at 2000 quid though.

As it stands I think the 5070ti at $750 while not amazing either is probably the sensible option this gen assuming you can get one for that price.

Indeed. They probably did what is best for them to maximise profits.

We may not like it, but come next gen it will all be forgotten about anyway.

Yeah, 5070Ti seems to be the only sensible GPU. If I can get get one around launch or by the summer, I might do so. If not then that happy to wait until next gen which I hear might be a lot quicker than 24 months.

I did see a while back that Nvidia was moving to a 1 year cycle but I’m not sure if that is just for the AI stuff, either way they will probably do a super refresh at the very least in a year where everything will be bumped up a tier.

After selling my 4090 and currently using my 4070 which is a very capable card considering it's only 200W TDP (yes the 12GB VRAM is a limiting factor) am I mad in considering getting a 5080 FE? Only reason I say this is maybe they will be easier to get than the 5090, as there seems to be less love for it as it only has 16GB VRAM and half the CUDA count of the 5090. But in theory it will offer similar performance to my old 4090 but with newer AI and MFG features and a lower power consumption. Another reason I'm thinking this is I only have a 60hz monitor, so do I really need a 5090 other than bragging rights and benchmark scores? I know one option is to wait for the 5080 Ti or super but for me buying mid cycle is a waste as the 60 series would be out 12 months later!

Upgrade that monitor instead WTF

you could literally get a 1440p 240Hz Oled for £450 even cheaper 2nd hand.

MFG as a feature you want while playing at 60Hz madness.

Yes I need to upgrade the monitor its an LG 4K 60hz monitor but coming up to 7 years old now. I'll probably wait for the 27 inch 4K OLED monitors to be released, I almost bought a 1440p OLED a few times but backed out as read about text issues and brightness etc. I'm just worried if I dropped £900 on a monitor I could end up disappointed versus my trusty LG which has been flawless for over 9000 hours use! I do actually have an Acer 144hz 1440p LCD monitor I bought about 3 years ago for playing the F1 game but that's currently in the wardrobe as only have so much space on my desk for laptop and monitor etc lol!

You won't be disappointed with the 27" 4K OLED's coming soon, I'm pretty sure. As for the text fringing that's fair enough, some people are more sensitive to it than others. I personally haven't had any issues with it except for Gen 1 OLED Panels we're now at Gen 3 (2024) and possible 3.5/4 for the latest displays coming out soon.

Pair that with a 5080 and you'll actually make use of MFG :) then it's worth the investment.

Just noticed which monitor you have. The perfect MFG monitor! Wish i had that alongside my 4k 240hz.

Yeah that's exactly why I want a 5090, without the MFG feature, I'd have just gone back to a 4090, so they were smart enough to reel me in with that, maximising my monitors capability in more games than I was ever expecting? win/win but remember high base fps or it'll be hit heavy with latency. I don't expect Stalker 2 for example to be that great with it, but fun to find out.

What would be the most sensible thing to do if using a 3090 currently? Wait a gen or go for a 5080? I'm at 3440x1440 and happy with 165hz.

The 3090 is still a great card. Might be able to get 500-600 for it so you'd have to fork out around the same again for the 5080. Maybe get a 40% uplift in gaming performance? You would also be losing out on 8GB of VRAM. I wouldn't bother with this gen.

That's kind of where I'm at, always nice to get some confirmation bias!

There are a few things where it might be nice to improve ray tracing performance but it's a "nice to have". Can't say I really think about it once playing.

I will be interested to try it out tbh, but i imagine the only game i will find it useful to be MSFS 2024. The extra latency in games like CP2077 and Stalker 2 is a non-starter for me. I 'only' have 240fps to play with, so 3x frame gen is probably enough for me.

But thats not what this indicated:

Faster with less vram usage.

(Unless its specifically referring to FG)

I’m a bit undecided…

I did a full upgrade back in August/September:

Ryzen 9950x
ASUS x870e Hero
96gb Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5

Given that my system is largely for productivity due to my line of work, I skipped a generation and stayed with my trusty 3090, with the expectation of upgrading to a 5090 on launch.

As much as I would love to get back into gaming and get more out of my system than just work, a demanding toddler and never ending work commitments mean that I doubt that will become a reality any time soon; and couple that with the fact that my main monitor is a 60hz Dell 8k 32 inch (280 PPI makes sense with what I do and I could never go back to 4K for work usage) I’m starting to think that grabbing a 5090 would be a little bit pointless now.

Should I just grab a 2nd hand 4090 now? Get a 5080? Skip another generation?

I’m feeling the GPU upgrade itch and the price doesn’t really concern me, it just feels a bit wasted if I won’t be coupling it with a high refresh rate monitor and gaming heavily.

Buy a 5090 and 4K 240hz OLED as a second monitor. If your desk is big enough, that's the dream, right? Whilst the money isn't a big factor, it's still a chunk of change. Would a 5090 help speed up your work in any way? Otherwise, i think it's pretty tricky to justify spending c.£3k if you go all in.
