Torvalds isn't yet ready to apologize for giving Nvidia the finger

Editor's note: See the update at the end of this article for Linus Torvalds' response to Nvidia.

Few companies have been the target of as much criticism in the Linux community as Nvidia. Linus Torvalds himself last year called Nvidia the "single worst company" Linux developers have ever worked with, giving the company his middle finger in a public talk.

Obviously leading to / relating to steambox compatibility stuff :)

Safe to assume it has nvidia hardware in it.

This is just the open source community-developed driver. The Steambox will use Nvidia's proprietary binary driver which is considered very good.

So this has nowt to do with Steambox.

Broom add the picture as part of your post. It really captures the theme of the article well.

"...so NVIDIA, **** you!"

^That was his words when he held up the bird.

Safe to assume it has nvidia hardware in it.

Looking that way it seems.

Or does it?

Both AMD and nvidia have been putting a lot into Linux lately. Since any manufacturer will be able to release a PC with SteamOS, they'll both want to be good options for the GPU (but yes, the proprietary drivers will be needed for gaming).

That ^^^ AMD are going on about Linux driver improvements rather a lot latley.

Could be AMD as much as Nvidia, or even both.

Gotta love Torvalds. One of the few remaining real characters in computing.

I do feel that Linux will become increasingly important for gaming as the years go by and maybe that's why both AMD and Nvidia are putting effort in.

AMD are the company that gave up exclusivity with MS in the past several months and made a huge push with Linux drivers and went open source for Linux quite some time ago. The giving up exclusivity with MS publically several months ago seems a much bigger "we're working with someone on a new OS" message than Nvidia simply copying AMD with open source Linux drivers after being being called out on their lack of an open source driver for a very long time and being compared poorly in comparison to AMD.

This seems more like Nvidia finally being forced to match AMD in the area, not a statement of much else. But it also highlights something else, just about anyone who works with Nvidia seems to talk about them being horrible to work with, with many companies stopping working with them.

As above, Linux dev's kinda hate Nvidia, Sony/MS(at least in terms of consoles) both moved away from Nvidia after working with them. Would be a bold move for Valve to go away from the hugely widely supported next gen AMD optimisation to buck the trend.

A new OS, new PC's trying to attract people to it and maybe away from a console, the safe move would be having hardware that would be as compatible and optimised for AAA games as possible.
