I hope the mods don't mind this as it isn't directly regarding gpu hardware but what the heck is going on with NV stock price, I've just taken a look on the Beebs website and on Dec 30th it was around £15 and at the moment it is at nearly £20

That is a 33% hike in a week, is a takeover looming or something???

J.

Nvidia's price was way down low the past 12months due to the Fermi debacle, I guess market confidence is returning due to the release of the 5** and the poor showing of AMDs latest offerings.

Nvidia working with arm on a CPU is big driver behind more recent drive up.
Nvidia also has improved their video card range massively compared to 6months.
Poor show from 69 series.
Supercomputer based on fermi.
Apple continuing to use Nvidia product.
Edit:- targa2 in more devices.
All contributed to recent upsurge.

lolz at poor AMD show
its hardly poor is it.

nvida cant produce the numbers, thus retailers charge what they like because people a foolish enough to buy them at silly prices

AMD had to slash the prices of the 69** cards at the last minute because of the early release the 5**.

i understand that jokester, but this has nothing to do with NV pricing
by AMD doing that, i'd say it give more reason to buy AMD over NV
why people would choose NV over AMD at the moment is beyond me

Microsoft is confirming windows for ARM, they confirmed desktop level ARM cpu/gpu fusion chips, and google confirmed nvidia tegra was the defacto platform for 3.0.

Remind us all with AMD sources, what was the original price point for the 6900 series before the prices where slashed?

Edit - Feel like I set myself up with this one but as I said it I deserve someone to come up with solid info and make me look foolish :p

AMD confirm nothing till they actually release it, but given that Gibbo confirmed the week before that prices of £360-400 depending on the brand and that he would have plenty of stock, indicates that he had already organised the cards supply at those prices. Pretty sure he then said that AMD were going to be doing a hefty discount or some such a day or two before.

That is how I remember it.

The 6900 range was a direct replacement. I think Gibbo just got swept along with the excitement and assumed a GTX580 killer would come in just under Nvidia RRP's.

ATI was never going to over charge for mass produced cards.

Oh come on, Gibbo had already ordered the cards, do you really believe he didn't know what price he was being charged for them? Some sites abroad had even listed them for pre-order with the equivalent prices in Euros.

ATI would have had to have been out of out of their minds to charge anything over 5000 RRP's. The cards would have never gone to retail for that price.

They would have if Nvidia hadn't have launched the 5** series out of the blue and it was instead competing with a £280 GTX 570, rather than a £400 GTX 480.

I dont see how the 500 cards made any differance as they pretty much just pushed Nvidia prices up even higher, yet offered the same performance.

Both the GTX480/GTX570 come in around the £300 mark and offered identical performance. All the GTX580 has done is push Nvidia into the uber high end dual chip price bracket. The card is so over priced it has little impact on retail prices.

The GTX580 is just a little fast then the GTX480 but £450. The extra 10-15% performance wouldn't have made much difference, unless ATI was expecting the GTX580 to have been much faster and pulled a higher priced/spec card at the last minute. Maybe we should have got a 2000SP GTX580 killer and didn't.

Simply because AMD is dissapointing ATM. But i do agree that it is kinda AMD's fault that the GTX 580 is so expensive - why can't those AMD ********* just release the 6990 and hope to reduce prices - we all know that NV has won the graphics war at the moment (unless AMD surprises us with awesomeness). Also, the GTX 580 is the best single chip card ATM - that's probably the main reason.
