Nvidia to AMD

Seems like supply is the new front line for GPUs, so the answer is it depends what I can actually buy for RRP.

100% agree, if a 3080 FE pops up, then that, other wise a Sapphire 6800 XT, if neither turn up in next few weeks, then nothing as I am bored with it all

Tempted to go for 6800XT. First time I would be buying AMD for the GPU for exactly 11 years. Bought a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X 30th October 2009 according to my Overclockers order history.

Had two Ryzen processors in the last 3 years, and the ecosystem idea tempts me as I have a x570 motherboard.

For me I don't care about RT this gen of cards the hit's too large still, my valve Index needs horsepower and a 165hz screen so rasta perf is key.
The only thing Nvidia holds for me atm is DLSS 2.0, and Im sure AMD will push theirs 2021 hard but it's unknown for sure I have DLSS on my 20 series and its seen zero use.

People keep talking about how the 6900xt was overclocked with Rage mode, to be clear Rage mode bumps the power available and Rage mode does not overclock the card.

Ampere has almost no overclock!
The fact we are seeing water cooled closed loop cards from AIB already? Suggest 6000 series overclocks well!

A quick Google "Average overclock 5700xt" results in 18%. That's RDNA1 and we are looking at RDNA2, so there is a good theoretical case right now that a well cooled 6000 is going to shizzle all over both the 3080 and 3090 is my thinking.

I'm thinking the same thing now, my only pause is that we'll see DLSS in VR games soon!

True, I've seen most of the 30X0 reviews and the OC potential is maybe 1-2% with a massive power usage jump, so what you see is what you get. The AIB's seem to be aiming for fairly decent overclocks out the box for the RDNA2 cards.

Yer I saw something along this line too the last couple of days... the Unreal engine is getting native DLSS support and when I think about how many VR games are unreal engine.....

Currently putting together a new build and would have just gone with intel/nvidia and plan was a RTX3080/i9 10900k but as its looking like Ill get an improvement in performance for the same money with Team red my current plan is to make the switch for the first time ever as long as reviews hold up.

However it really all depends on availability.

I've managed to get a 3080 FE and if the 6800XT trades blows I think I'd still be happier with the 3080, potentially ray tracing is going to be better on the 3080 though but that remains to be seen. I think the 3080 looks more premium and feels quality, not that many would take that into account with a GPU, but it's a really nice card and quiet, I'm not so sure I'd also make a jump to a 6900XT, I think that it's going to have to be another generation to make moving from 3080 worth it.

With Nvidia you become a slave and have no choices left as nvidia locks you in to their proprietary stuff.

AMD gives you the best hardware for gaming and gives you choices and options so you become a free man

Seems AMD allows you freedom

What in the world does NVIDIA lock you into?

I have a 2080 and I don't think I've been locked into anything.

Think he was referring to G-sync, which worked and has locked allot of people in, and Nvidia trying to lock you in with DLSS and RT, mostly claiming opensource stuff as their own and forcing customers into that eco system, much like Apple.

And i understand his feelings, as Nvidia and Apple lock people in then stop innovation and only iterate as little as possible to drain as many upgrades for as little work as possible out of everyone.
The world went from being crazed for innovation in the tech world to corporate driven iteration, gg Steve Jobbs great legacy.

I have always gone back and forth with AMD and Nvidia. Last 4 cards were 7950 to R290 to 980 GTX and current card 1080ti.

It was 5700xt or 1080ti but the driver issues for the 5700 put me off. Had no real driver issues with 7950 or the R290 so I wasn't swayed by past AMD driver issues either.

I don't understand blind loyalty to any brand that ultimately just wants your money.

People who are that die hard for a particular brand would buy a turd if it had a certain logo on it.:D

Currently running a 2070s, with a small overclock, but will be looking to pickup a 6800XT and pair with 5900x.
Can't wait to stretch the legs of my 35" monitor.

Both my TV and monitor are freesync and Gsync

Smart man, not everyone is smart :-)

Agree totally, I honestly don't understand this brand loyalty thing, are people so dumb to think the brand is loyal to them?

100%, it's always up and down so go with the one that fits your requirements. I'm building a full system so from my perspective, it makes sense to go full AMD.

I have a X570 Mobo and 3900x currently, looking to buy the 5900x on release if stock and web site crashes allow.
I have a 2080TI and im very tempted if stock allows to get the 6800xt Sapphire variant just like i used to in the old days lol.
I have no allegiance to either brand and my monitor is 1080p 240hz with both freesync and g-sync compatibility. BenQ ZOWIE XL2746S 27"
Pushing frames is what im after and even now @ 1080p some games dont hit those frames even on low settings, BFV etc.

Both my sons need new gpus as well and 1 is for a full build for my youngest new pc. His laptop is old (1070 gpu) and needs full system, expensive for sure, but there only kids once.
