Nvidia to End Support for All DX 10 Based Cards – Anything Not DX11 is being Left Behind

Driver support should never stop when the tech is still usable, any dx9 card capable of running aero should have working drivers.

Ah I see, no more optimizations, but I find ith ard to believe most of the optimizations they do, aren't capable of improving performance across the range.

You can't get blood from a stone, at some point a "last best release" is determined for x range of cards and they are removed from consideration completely by AMD/NV.

It's extremely annoying, I have a 2.2ghz c2d, 2gb ram lappy I chucked win 7 on, its fine for home use, chatting on skype, writing a letter, browsing the net, etc...

However, getting an x64 driver for the radeon express x1100 in it was a ****, the official AMD site was hopeless, only documentation no drivers.

In the end I got some kind of unofficial newer catalyst drivers that were modded to work on the x1xx series, works perfectly, but wasted 45 minutes looking for it.

What is the point in removing support for certain hardware ? It only made me think bad of AMD for making me waste 45 minutes installing a bloody gpu driver.

You don't see the same in other fields, just because a car is 20 years old doesn't mean new parts are not being made for it for repairs ?

If the device serves its function, like a 8800 series card is more than fine to play Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2 or so, then why would someone want to upgrade ?
And what of mobile devices like laptops ? Not like you can upgrade the gpu there .

Dont see a issue tbh with this decision, i'd say most if not all optimizations possible have already been wrung out of these cards.
Better to support newer cards with the same resources= better gains
Even if NVidia dont list the old drivers that work with this cards on their site plenty of places do and will work fine

The Release 340 drivers will continue to support these products until April 1, 2016, and the NVIDIA support team will continue to address driver issues for these products in driver branches up to and including Release 340. However, future driver enhancements and optimizations in driver releases after Release 340 will not support these products.

Its not happening for a bit anyway

Have there been changes to these cards in recent drivers? I'd have assumed either no or only minor ones anyway, not convinced this is important news. Life moves on, doesn't make old stuff worthless but support must end some time.

People have no excuses now the 750ti can be had for £115 and can run BF4 well at 1080p anyone who is still on DX 10 should really be playing on a console. It holds everyone back and now even pcworld boxes can be upgraded as there is no external power source needed for 750ti. If it was me i would have pulled the plug the day the maxwell drivers launched and cut the price to £110 or so. If people cant find £100 to upgrade they are in the wrong place to be a gamer

That is money and time spent away from the DX 11.2 version of the game for a small percentage of people. For all we know DX 10 might be really unsuitable to DX 12 and they need to push on with that soon.

I wonder if the Linux open source driver will be fine,ie,still is developed for?? Hopefully.

I would expect the Linux closed source nvidia driver to be discontinued but the open source driver to still be developed. Ironically for people with older cards running games on Linux under steam and open source drivers might be more viable than on windows.

Those 8800xxx are 7 - 8 years now so seems to be a fair line in the sand. I guess the would rather invest the time and effort in newer tech which is fair enough.

Nothing wrong with the decision, some of the older cards could be 10yrs+.

The last Nvidia driver with support should work every DX9 features anyway.

Indeed. Almost 8 years old cards. Is funny none complained about AMD stop supporting HD2000, 3000, 4000 last year which were newer cards than the ancient G80.


And is not like Nvidia stop supporting DX10 like some said. Is the GPU tech they stop supporting, nothing to do with the DX10. After all stop supporting their DX9 cards (7xxx) many years ago.
As for "power", a 8800GT today is comparable with the IGP found in the Haswell i7 CPU.

Yep, some people are misreading this and it will be older cards which are no longer supported full stop. Of course you can still use them but you will not be getting any optimisations at all.

No issues with this. It's not a removal of support/functionality for old cards which render them unusable. It's just that old cards will no longer get development time for new stuff. If your 8800GT does not work well in Battlefield 5, well - Tough titties really!

Old cards no longer get development time for new titles. New titles they wont be able to run anyway.

Old cards will still work on the latest current release drivers.

New cards get development as normal.
