Nvidia vs Ati Advice

It is, I was totally blown away by how good, simple and very, very effective the 3D is produced as I wasn't expecting much tbh, due to all the bad things said by forum members, it was always green team users dissing it-despite probably 99% of them never even trying it.

There was a thread a while back when a 6950 user asked about how to use 3D on his 3DTV, to be bombarded with, sell it, buy a 570 and 3D vision kit.

When I piped in(before using 3D) with why don't you just download Tridef and try it for free-as you might not even like it, I was flamed rotten by a few(shall remain nameless) saying Tridefs rubbish this, that and 3D vision is the way to go.

But that's nothing new, as both sides hard core element usually take that route anyway in all things red vs green, I never buy the drivel but feel the need to dismiss it for the uninformed as they can end up spending loads of cash for the wrong reasons.

I mean theres one user in this thread who has slated AMD's poor drivers/zero forum help despite not using one for years, so obviously jumped on the AMD mud slinging bandwagon.

It's no secret here that I've been using AMD since late 4870 release, but I don't attack Nvidia at every passing moment, it's a shame really because they are all good cards that usually(apart from this gen) sit in price brackets to suit needs.

Some very good info you have posted tommy (how I wish you have came into this thread sooner). Good to know that Tridef isn't as bad as most people making them out to be (despite still require setting up separately)...may be I will give it a go as well.

My birthday's coming up, and I've been thinking about treating myself to a 120Hz monitor. I have always been interested in one of those Samsung 120Hz 3D monitors (i.e. the Samsung S23A750D), but my 5850 wouldn't work with it in 3D I think? As I recall HD3D is from HD6000 onward. I would love to have a go at playing Guild Wars 2 in 3D, and possibly start to watch some 3D movies as well. So any specific hardware set up I would require for doing both after I got the Sammy? Am I gonna stucked with AMD cards if I was to keep the 3D for gaming?

Also, does the Benq XL2410T/2420T works with HD3D?

ATI cards are very good, go for nvidia, not really much in it tbh, go for 680, it's down to personal preference, go green, i'm not bios or anything and love how cheap the 7970 is, go for a 670 if you can't afford the 680, love how the red cards look inside the case, get a green one. The choice is yours, welcome to the Geforce series. Don't become a fan boy unless it's green :-)) Welcome to OCUK forums, visit the oc shop, it sells green cards, oh, did I mention how good nvidia cards are.
Oh and I can't spell, I meant byost, silly me.
lol.

:D good to know your not "bios"

bios is just the icing on the cake in that, pretty funny. :D

Genuinely not sure if serious

That's how we roll tommy.

Indeed, cba with all the grief it entails anyway. :)

Np.

Tridef is cpu dependant, but you've got that covered.

It doesn't even remotely deserve the negativity it warrants, but that's just the way it rolls, would love to try 3D vision though for a comparison.

There are places away from the bickering(I think, I just look at the gaming reviews) that concentrate on 3D gaming and give you great info too:

I don't have a clue about your 5850 doing the few titles that have native 3D like Sniper 2 etc, but your 5850 will work in Tridef.

Merlin over in the New Samsung S23A700D 120Hz thread, was using a 5850 on one, although he was using SBS(980x1080) which is less demanding on the gpu than FS(1920x1080) but obviously isn't as good.

Most titles I played were CrossFire friendly, but a few weren't, long story short, before I gave in and bought a 7970, I was only using a single 6950>70, which isn't that much faster than your 5850 and it was fine for the most part as you don't use AA or blur effects with 3D anyway.:)

If you get a Sammy, afaik, it comes with a Tridef license, if not I can send you a ½ price link(~£16) if it still works.

For 3D movies, any media player can be 3D converted onboard.

Same goes for games, essentially every game you have can be played with zero overhead on the Sammy's/similar native 3D monitors but it is nowhere near as immersive as a proper Tridef profile.

For blurays you need Power DVD or Arcsoft, but being a 5850, check first, it 'just works' with 69 series onwards that I have tried.

Am I gonna stucked with AMD cards if I was to keep the 3D for gaming?

It's looking like it from Clee's reply earlier in the thread, but there will come a point, if need be I'll hack the .inf and give it a go.

I'm prepared to purchase the Nvidia 3D kit, but not another monitor, I would just be stuck on AMD by principle.

Also, does the Benq XL2410T/2420T works with HD3D?

No, strictly speaking, they aren't 3D monitors at all, they are 120Hz monitors that can do 3D with Nvidia gpus, via their 3D kit-nvidia emitter/glasses.

Without the Nvidia kit they are 'just' 120Hz monitors, nothing more.

It's a pita **** tbh, I don't care who's to blame, it's just **** that the likes of myself and others here too, do not have the simple choice to switch vendors if they please.

My first impressions thread:

Just to give you a major dilema, titles like DIII, DAII, Torchlight are simply fantastic in 3D, so I'm guessing GW2 will be too. ;)

If you could get a 2420TX imported then you'd have an emitter on the actual monitor. Not sure if that would allow hd3d though.. wonder if anyone's tried?

It used to deserve the negativity it got but I hear its a lot better these days - its well over 2 years since I last had anything todo with it. I still don't rate any 3D type system of any type currently out tho for playing games, good as a novelty but not really practical or comfortable in my experience for everyday gaming and many games are clumsier to play with it than without.

Just want to clarify a few things...

I read on reviews that the Sammy's onboard 2D to 3D works not too bad for games, but I also read some users feedback that in terms of movies/videos, 2D to 3D is kind of poor. So for watching actual 3D movies (Blu-Ray 3D on PowerDVD etc, rather than using the onboard 2D to 3D random players), my 5850 might not be compatable with that...so I might need a 6000 series or above card?

Also for gaming at 120Hz or using the onboard 2D to 3D conversion, I MUST use a display port cable for plugging in both the monitor and the graphic card, or do I need to get one of those active/passive display port adaptor or something? (I'm talking about strictly one screen here).

now that i have connected it directly to th tv i can activate the hdmi 1.4a 24p 3d bluray play back @power dvd 11 ultra + radeon hd5850 .

Well, thats wired, i played 3D blu ray movies on my 5850 with power DVD 10
3D version on samsung c7000TV

You dont need no special driver or anything like that, just the power dvd with 3D support

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=331396

2D>3D conversion is exactly that, it tries it's best, but obviously can't get to a 'proper' true 3D movie levels of 'popout', the same can be said with games, with slightly better 'popout', but it doesn't get remotely close on what Tridef can achieve.

If you looked up the link I posted, the general consensus is that, through time, Tridef can keep updating profiles, making them better for 3D effects, hence a lot of Nvidia users enjoying Tridef.

Also for gaming at 120Hz or using the onboard 2D to 3D conversion, I MUST use a display port cable for plugging in both the monitor and the graphic card, or do I need to get one of those active/passive display port adaptor or something? (I'm talking about strictly one screen here).

My monitor doesn't have a DP, it uses DL-Dvi for 120Hz FS 3D, perhaps the one your thinking of works the same, maybe post off a thread in the monitor section?

You may not need an adaptor keeping the cost to a minimum.
