it will just make cards with almost no vram the norm never mind that browsers, steam and such can hog vram as it is, with my 3080 i had to turn off hardware acceleration on lots of things just so i had enough available to play games. you will get the issue when they also slap it on a card with a tiny memory bus gimping it totallyif it gives a 8gb card the ability to create textures at 95% normal where gameplay is good rather than the frames dropping through the floor, i'm an in..however the downside I'm guessing is that this is another cog in the process, so much like multiframe, is going to add latency to the game? or will it not be a factor?
be a bit like driving my brother in laws toyota pickup...turn the wheel and a 2nd later i know we're turning when the horizon tilts and I feel the body lean. perfectly fine for the pickup, and adds to the fun, esp offroad, but not really welcome in a more sport environment

Probably not the best example. Start listening to flac and you'll notice the difference vs mp3. Equally an 8-bit jpg at 10 quality is going to look worse than a 10-bit tiff. Not necessarily.
Does 7zip lose information when you compress things?
Does mp3 or jpeg loose noticeable quality (when used at sensible settings)?
There are surely a lot of pretenders and rich posers, perhaps more than we think, but this is quite a sweeping statement, which is effectively untrue.Cousin of mine is an audiophile, I swapped out 1 of the albums he was listening to regularly that was "super mega high bit rate mega super" for one that was 320kbps and he didn't notice until I said something a year later
The amount of BS the audiophile community comes out with is quite entertaining![]()
Doubt it'll be implemented soon but could do wonders for low VRAM cards.
How will this affect avatars in VR chat?
Id take the physical vram thanks, this is almost certainly going to have some drawbacks that they've yet to mention
Compression doesn't have to reduce quality. Agreed with the rest though. First thing I thought was it's another tech to gatekeeper gaming. You'll get the NV version, which will fit inside a normal amount of VRAM on their cards, or you'll get the Fallout 4 HD texture pack special.Bingo!
No compression is perfect, texture compression will reduce image quality. Secondly Nvidia's texture compression only runs on Nvidia GPU's and only in games that specifically use texture compression - and this is a big problem. Since DLSS was launched, 1000 games have been updated to use DLSS, but since DLSS was launched, 40 thousand new games were added to Steam. So when Nvidia gives you an 8GB GPU and promises you it will be fine because of texture compression but then only 2.5% of games support texture compression, that's a big problem and just giving your GPU more VRAM would have been more beneficial.
