Hi guys, I know you are all probably fed up hearing about people having problems with their display drivers, but I have spent the last two weeks looking for solutions, trying this suggestion and that - from posts I have read in all the tech forums. I have tried to contact the tech support for both my graphics card and mobo makers but no help as yet. Can someone please offer me some assistance?

I have a P5K3 Deluxe mobo, 2 gig kingston DDR3 Ram, BFG 8800 Ultra, QX6850 CPU and a nice new Dell 24" monitor and all I can do is surf the net. I have downloaded all the latest drivers but nothing seems to work, Oh I'm running Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

I get the error message whenever I try to play any games (even Chess Titans!!!) and sometimes when watching video.

Cheers

Hi and welcome ;)

In a lot of cases its the card overheating, I'd check the gpu temps first off all. If they are a bit high use gainwards expert tool (among others) to up the fan speed a bit.

This error seems to have a different cause on every PC it occurs on, so there isn't a water tight fix (so to speak).

Some users blame vista whilst others blame nvidia's drivers, when infact it's could well be hardware related, memory to be precise. (113 + 33 pages highlighting the problem on Nvidia's forums).

After skimming over those threads I noticed there's a fair few users reporting they fixed the problem by running the memory synched with the fsb and / or removing a stick of ram all together.

There's also a few users here reporting the problem disappeared after fitting new memory (even though their old ram would cruise 8hrs+ of memtest?).

If you haven't already then maybe try running a game with only one stick of ram, if you still get the error then try with just the other stick.

Hopefully the problem will only occur with the same module fitted, therefore pinpointing you to the problem.

i can tell you it is not Nvidias fault.

Ati users the same error, but linking to a different driver (atikmdag.sys )

The error is vistas fault, i know cause i dual boot this machine with xp, and for most of the time game in xp as to avoid this crash.

the error is in how vista recovers from a graphics driver crash of some sort. in that, they handled it well in xp, and poorly in vista :(

the error has been around since vistas launch and is stil going :(

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try the GPU Temp and memory suggestions now and update once I have done this. Thanks again.

Update

The temp of the GPU is 59, I set the fan speed using NTune to 70% and then ran the performance stability test, it ran for about 10 seconds before crashing with the error message "C:\windows\system32 nvcplui.exe abnormal program termination" ?????

One other thing is that I have run a prog called driver detective and it reports that:-

Intel (R) 82801 PCI Bridge 244E - Driver is out of date - using MS driver dated 21-6-06 and most up to date driver is Intel 7.0.0.1011 dated 15/9/06

Intel (R) G33/G31/P35 Express chipset PCI Express Root Port - 29C1 - Driver out of date - using Intel 8.3.0.1011 dated 6/2/07 - latest driver Intel 8.3.1.1003 dated 1/5/07

I have downloaded and installed the Intel Chipset Software Utililty it directs me to, but it doesnt update the drivers. Dont know if this sheds any light on anything, I'll try the removing a stick of RAM and see where that takes me.

Problem Solved!!

Hi,

Bizarre your solution solved the problem:D I removed a stick of ram and I can now run Aero, watch movies and, most importantly play games!! Everythings a little slower but I can put up with a little slowness if I have my machine back for its intended use. Im going to try and seat the extra memory stick in another slot to see if that works, I would also like to try and synch the memory with the FSB but am unsure how to do this, can you please advise??

Thanks to you all for your suggestions, I spent two whole weeks trying different drivers, re-installing Vista, trying Vista 64 bit, sending emails to MS, nVidia and ASUS when really I should have come to you guys. Thanks again.
