I have a EVGA 8800 Ultra KO version for a little over a year now and I have always had problems playing COD:MW where I would get the nvlddmkm error. But it rarely effected other games like Team Fortress2, CSS, day of Defeat ect...
The nvlddmkm error was annoying but I just stopped playing COD:MW in the end and thought nothing of it.
But I recently got my copy of Call of Duty: World at War and I can't play the game as I keep getting the same error where the game either just freezes or the screen goes black and I can hear the games sound. When I end the games task I have a small yellow triangle in the task bar that pops up saying that "the nvlddmkm driver failed and has now recovered". Now when I load the game back up again it does the same thing. On a system restart I can play the game for a couple of minutes sometimes for longer than an hour but eventually I have the same outcome.

This is now starting to effect other games which it hasn't done in the past, like when I try and start a game on the Left 4 Dead Demo the game just freezes for a couple of seconds and then starts again and then again a freeze and just repeats the same pattern until I end the games task in the task manager.

I have the latest nvidia drivers, my windows is up to date.

So can anyone tell me whats going on please, is my GPU about to die ?

Thanks
Danny

I know it's a long shot, but have you tried reformatting and rebuilding your system?

its annoying problem to say the least its all to do with vista's tdr's ( time detection and response ) most people seem to think its either to many nvidia driver entries in the system registry or memory related

try for solutions here same for ati and nvidia cards

Tried all of them and still getting the same problem !

My system was formatted just over 2 weeks ago.

I have the same problem when playing the game IL2 forgotten battles. I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) and can play the game all day every day on Windows XP Pro with latest service pack and updates. If I switch to Vista Ultimate x64, I get random crashes between 1 hour and 4 hours. It is a bit annoying but the only solution for now is to run everything on Vista x64 bar the game and reboot to the other HD and use Windows XP to enjoy the game. There was no point in me re-formatting the new HD and re-installing Vista x64 Ultimate as the game has had the same problem on this Operating System since installing it from new. I have even tried using each video card individually and also in SLI mode. It happens least often with single cards, but it still happens. I have tried last 4 versions of the nVidia drivers, but alas no change. Please refer to my signature for the hardware I am running.

A few people have been getting the display driver errors with left 4 dead - seems the game makes the GPU a lot hotter than most games* and sometimes the cooling doesn't handle it too well - try forcing the fan speed to higher than normal before playing.

* On my 260GTX it hits 80C - no other game including farcry 2, furmarks, COH, etc. gets it above 60.

I use CPUID hardware monitor and in both operating systems in the game, the GPU temperatures are exactly the same at 82 degrees Centigrade. So in my case the GPU temps are not the issue.

I wouldn't bet on that - my 8800GT rig hits 80C while playing left 4 dead and crashed with display driver errors even tho its stable in all other games at that temp - once I turned the fan upto 60% bringing temps down to 58C in game - I've not seen it crash since. Which is why I started looking up on this.

I presume you are answering my post about SLI and CPUID hardware temperature monitoring? That being the case, please could you advise me which software you are using to keep the temperatures constant at 58C? Link to it?

Ooops thought you were the OP when I posted that.

I just used rivatuner to force my 8800GTs to a higher fanspeed constantly - nothing elegant... I don't think what I'm saying applies to driver errors in other games tho - jstu left 4 dead specifically.

Getting exact same eroors in CODMW too have tried various fixes and removing nvlddmkm.sys file.doing safe mode driver clean then installing clean set of gpu drivers.so haven't had crash as yet.keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen .
