Got one of these

Samsung 970 EVO

i want to put in a caddy to either use as an external drive or maybe format and put into pc for a game or 2 it is only 250GB(has The old OS on and keeps booting instead of new drive :(
There are so many types of nvme `ends`
Which type do i look for??? ngff etc etc etc  :)

Anything which says 2280 support should work - even the cheap ones are generally OK.

IIRC NGFF was just an old reference to M.2 but I might be wrong on that.

Would want a 20Gbs caddy
To get most of the drives speed
Assuming motherboard/case
Has a 20Gbs port

If you have 2 drives
Both with windows on them
You should make sure removing/formatting
That 250GB
Doesn't leave pc unbootable
If both are in the boot record
Can check using msconfig
Or software like easybcd

Iv found caddies that use the realtek rtl9210 and B varient work very well for stability and reliability. No disconenctions no corruption no random drop outs.
Jmicron and asmedia ones I've had no luck with for long sustained transfers.
You can get orico and sabrent ec-snve that use the realtek controller chip. The orico one can be had for less than a fiver if you want the nvme only version and not m.2 sata as well. Dual protocol version can be had for under 8 quid too your door.

I haven't tried recent enclosures, having given up with data corruption last summer (2022). While the data seemed to transfer okay, using FC in command prompt to compare the files revealed corruption on many/all files across various enclosures. The only one I can rely on is my faithful Sabrent EC-TFNE.

I have also tried various USB C cables with the above enclosures, but these also seemed to make no difference. It's probably just my motherboard being picky. :(

Ended up getting a beikell caddy
it was mainly to format the drive so that it could go back into the pc as a xtra storage drive
Had to faff about using diskpart to finally get it formatted
Did not have a nvme caddy so it is ideal as an option for the future :)

I have been on the lookout recently as a mate gave me his old 512Gb 2230 from his Steamdeck when he upgraded to a 2Tb. I have been looking for a nice little enclosure for it and found a few. A lot are using the jmicron controller though.

sabrent ec-snve uses realtek and the orico ones also use same realtek chipset but can be had a a third of the price of the sabrent.
