hi guys,

i was wondering if anyone knows if i can use the new nvme m.2 ssd for the dell venue laptop? my ssd on my laptop is not that fast and i imagine if the new nvme ssd is compatible then it would boost the performance a great deal.

many thanks

Without the actual exact model number, nobody will be able to answer this question for you.
If the likes of Notebookcheck.net have reviewed your exact model, they should have hinted on this in their review. Unusually, a NBC review of the 2014 model mentioned a removable back cover with access to the SSD which is a hopeful sign but the trend since then has been to make things less serviceable.

It is a Dell so it should have a service manual although part numbers tend to be elsewhere.
Anyway, as expected from the age, the supplied M.2 slot is SATA. Dell's specs are poor but I had no hits searching for it with an NVMe drive so pretty sure the slot is SATA only.
The other thing is that the form factor is M.2 2260 rather than 2280 meaning there is almost nothing which actually fits.
Unsure if 2242 would suit as it really wants a screw mount and there is only the 60mm one according this youtube guide
RAM is soldered so I think you out of luck.

2242 drive would need something to do hold it on its place.

Dell desktop PCs have used lots of non-standard parts and connectors.
So natural for them to use very unusual M.2 size.

Transcend MTS600 serie is pretty much only 2260 SATA M.2.

thank you guys

i have had a look at the back of mine to see if the ssd shows up there but looking at the other models, it seems like where the ssd should be, it has a little circuit board there. no idea what that is.

this is what mine looks like when i take the back off

il ty=ry take a pic of it without the black thing

In the worst case also that SSD has been soldered onto motherboard.
Though would be weird to have at the same time that easily replaceable battery.
Did you check what's under the battery?

That is strange as the disassembly video didn't look like that.
The video was for the 7139, so is this the 7130?
Yet NBC said the SSD was easy to replace. Maybe there where revisions.
Anyway, if it turns out to be the 2260 M.2 SATA only slot, then there is no meaningful upgrade you can actually do.

yeah, i find it very strange too.

while i was looking for images for my tablet, my model came up as dell venue pro 11 security, im guessing mine got more security?

They're not going to convince me, but in theory a device where you solder the SSD could have some form of encryption where the drive could never be read without a TPM on the motherboard or CPU.
All sounds rather anti-consumer but in some corporate talk it could be called a security feature :-(

What is the service tag for your laptop? Assuming ST stands for service tag, I am reading the service tag as 7JNX7Z1. However Dell's support page doesn't recognise the number.

is it safe to post my service tag on here?
Unless somebody knows better, I don't see why not.
It should only really list the parts numbers which went into your machine and not anything identifiably like the MAC of the network cards or your current IP address.

Anyway, I think we have come to the conclusion that your machine does not support NVMe M.2 SSDs.

However, it would still be useful to see what your machine does support as it was strange that under the back panel there as only the battery.

You should be able to find the model number of your existing drive. Easiest way is probably too go to Device Manager, expand drives and get Properties. In there under Details you should find the Hardware IDs. Use those to find the exact make and model of your existing drive.
We want to see if it is M.2 and what size (possibly 2260), or even if it is a soldered part.

EDIT:
Device manager should show something like this:
