Hi i am looking for either 1 or 2tb nvme m2 drive

Is there a list of the top 4 or 5 most desirable drives that are not going to break the bank?

The WD Black SN770 is probably the best option for price/performance. The 2TB version is currently available for £104.99. You can also get the Crucial T500 2TB for £116.99 which includes a heatsink.

So some of these drives need heatsinks
I mean is it dangerous without one and how do I know which drive needs a heatsink or not

Don't need heatsink motherboard has them. Mine stays pretty cool under 30 with the heatsink. Gen 4.

No point going gen 5, I haven't noticed much speed difference between SATA 500GB and gen 4 under normal use.
T500 is a Gen 4 drive, its the T700/705 that are Gen 5.

We don't know whether or not the OP needs a heatsink, but if he does then the T500 is a great buy.

Lots of motherboard these days come with heatsinks so you can get bare drives or heatsink versions depending on what you need.

Heatsinks aren't necessary but some drives will throttle under heavy load without a heatsink. Just because they don't come with a heatsink doesn't mean they won't benefit from one.

What motherboard and CPU have you got?
