NVME To Sata III adaptor

I've got two NVME slots on my motherboard which are each occupied with 500GB drives, one which is my system drive and the other for game storage.

I want to replace one of these with a 1tb drive so i have more space for games. I cant use a PCIE adaptor to add an extra NVME drive as my graphics card obscures the slot, so im looking for a way to use the 500gb drive. I know I could get an external enclosure, but would prefer an internal solution.

I could also buy a sata 1tb SSD like a Samsung/Crucial/Sandisk but not sure its worth it to spend basically the same on a much slower drive.

Can I get an NVME to Sata 3 adaptor so I can use this drive as I would a standard HDD or Sata SSD?

Ive tried the big online retailer but most of these seem to say they are not compatible with the 'M Key' drives which I gather are NVME drives

Nvme drives can't run on Sata, nvme is a protocol that runs over the pcie bus.

Sata ssd runs the achi protocol.
 
Guess your signature isn't up to date then, because that 860 Evo is 2.5" SATA SSD...
And this is why it's very bad idea to buy small M.2 drives for any reason.

While PCIe electromechanical specification defines 55mm as max thickness, many graphics cards break that and consume few millimeters more.
Though not sure how tight that 55m is.
That could be to leave room for something on backside of the next card and card with stuff only on "front" side could leave few extra millimeters of space.

As an alternative for external USB M.2 adapter, many of which are only for SATA and you need to look for NVMe/PCIe (google for used bridge chip) adapter, there are PCIe x1 slot adapters:
Though those are obviously limited to single PCIe lane, meaning 1 GB/s max for PCIe v3 and 2 GB/s for PCIe v4 drive.

Yes the signature is slightly out of date. I had not updated it with the second M2 drive, which is a 500GB WD Blue. This is the drive i was looking to replace with the 1TB. Should have got that in a 1TB model instead!

I still have the Samsung 860 SSD Sata and also a 5TB mechanical HDD attached via SATA. Looking at my motherboard, there is technically a free PCI slot for an adaptor, but its right underneath the GPU fans so thats not going to work. However, if I move the GPU to this slot, then this is too close the bottom of the case.

Only reason I started down this path was because i wanted to move some of my newer games from the mechanical to SSD to hopefully reduce load times!
 
Any SSD would be big improvement from old "spinning rust" for loading times.
NVMe isn't really required for that giving extra speedup over SATA only in some games, which are less processing limited.
Though when not processing limited loading time can shrink literally into individual seconds with fast NVMe:

While USB 3.2 Gen2 is theoretically equal in speed, that x1 slot adapter would give better speed, because of no need for any bridge chip and signal conversions.
