It appears the stock hdd has failed on my Reolink RLN8-410 NVR, as its showing no drive connected, and I can't access playback features. Unless it's up and vanished like a fart in the wind, it's in there.

I was looking at WD Purple Pro surveillance drives but just wondering what people recommend?

We use a mixture of WD Purple / Seagate Skyhawk depending on what's in stock at the time, not had any failures on either side as yet

Another vote for WD Purples, I have about 5 years runtime on the drives in my 3x NVRs right now. One of them is in an unheated garage and is exposed to a wide range of temperatures throughout the year, if it failed tomorrow I wouldn't be disappointed.

I just ordered a Skyhawk as it had similar reviews and I got a good deal. Be interesting to see what the pre installed drive is, with it failing after roughly a year.

I have the same NVR.
I think the standard unit comes with a 2TB WD Green. The max it can have is 4,6 or 8TB via the internal SATA(depending on the version), according to the user manual. So better to check which version you have nad replace with a biggest WD purple you can afford.

EDIT:
Here is a link to max HDD compatibility based on the hardware version

As I say, I got a great deal on a Skyhawk. It can unofficially support up to 8tb but I went with a 4tb, I've only got 4 cameras and that's double the capacity of the stock drive

It was a Toshiba DT02ABA200V, so a commercial surveillance drive. Odd that it's failed so quickly.

On a side note, not super impressed with the internal gubbins of the Reolink NVR. Looks pretty janky to me, it works well enough though.
