my friend has just built his own p.c (pretty cheap one), and he found the o.s would not install under the IDE option in the BIOS, so he installed in under the other option RAID, and it works perfect, the problem comes now when he adds another HDD, the machine will boot and say HDD failure insert system disk, which he hasnt got. and if he switches the BIOS to IDE the system will load XP then shutdown due to a technical error that comes up with the blue screen.

any ideas on how he can either get it back to IDE (which is starnge becuase he uses sata HDD's)

and get his other hdd's installed and working :S

lol if you want any more specifics just ask :)

erm

pentium D 2.66ghz
an MSI board (dont really know 7 something)
a 320gb samsung hdd and a 160gb seagate hdd
XFX 4850 XXX CARD
1GB RAM (cheap stuff)

Bad first choice I fear, he should have installed as ahci not as raid.
Raid is only a good idea when, well, using raid :)

sata is an ide drive. pata is also an ide drive.
pata is the ribbon cables, but for some reason everyone calls pata drives ide. enhanced ide mode is therefore fine for sata drives.

Best answer would be to reinstall using ahci. Second best, and quicker + easier is to install the drivers xp needs to run from an ide drive then change the setting in the bios. This way it'll get past the blue screen

the o.s wouldnt install in ide mode, it just hanged on the first install part of xp pro, on the part where it load windows executive lol

he hasnt got the install cd anymore, so the only choice aas u say is to install the driver but where to download them lol ?

Aye, I saw that it wouldn't install in ide mode. The solution to that is to install in ahci mode, not in raid mode.
No longer having the install cd is unfortunate. I'm unsure as to the legal standing of downloading one and using your own cd key (linux boy here).

So yep, I think you're going to have to find drivers. Google should offer many many guides on this, as a lot of people install in ide mode then decide they want to change to ahci and vice versa.

This may all be overlooking a rather bigger problem, namely why it wouldn't install under ide mode. It definitely should have done, this is normally the fallback position for when ahci is misbehaving. That's a much more difficult question.

Ah. That's unfortunate. I have nothing useful to add then, I suspect his board has had it but cannot be certain of this. Standard tests like memtest would be worth running, and try install from a xp disk known to be good. If it still doesn't run under ide, try installing ubuntu. If that wont install either, then he only gets to use it with one hard drive, and I wouldn't put data I relied upon on it.
Good luck

ubuntu installs fine he had that before but needed adobe suites. he tried to xp install disks, the first he sent back becuase it hanged and this one he mucked about with and did the RAID thing lol, a think a new mobo is in order he'll jus have to pay a bit lol

Now I've only skimmed the thread so apologies if this has been mentioned before but this sounds like a plain and simple boot priority problem. When you add the second HDD are you sure that the system is still trying to boot off the one with the OS on it?

That looks a long way offtopic, which graphics card?

P5Q is a lovely board, quite an improvement. Hope he likes it :)
I remain a bit confused by motherboard adapters, the one I've just got has 6 sata ports, but only four of them work unless i set ahci mode. Strange.

very off topic but quite true lol, he decided on the parts himself and only told me after he had ordered them lol

im going to take it all of his hands and rebuild it for him properly lol

I think he means a 4850 with a pentium d and a gig of ram... the 4850 likely doesn't get out of idle most of the time.

Kick him in the nerd, get him a p5q and 4gb ram, then insist he puts a proper processor in it sometime.

i no when i saw it the first thing i said was 'you idiot'

im changing my i7 processor soon, i might see if he can stretch a bit to a cheap x58 board and some cheapish ddr3 ram and stick my old i7 in there
