o2 + 3G speed

I usually get 1700-1800kbps on the 3G here.

That's amazing considering my ADSL tops out at 2048kbps :o

:D

/looks towards his Virgin Media 50Mb! **downloaded EVE Online @ 5.7MB/sec**

Ho ho ho.

On a real note: I briefly used my iPhone with the MBA as a modem, signed up to their tethering package for like 2 months. Lag was the only problem, other than that I got similar to EVH was good enough for general browsing.

o2 reception here is awful, it claims its a full 3 bar signal but its slow as hell all of the time.. Its the only reason im leaving them when my contract is up.. I guess if this thing with voda goes ahead it could help..

What? You complain about their coverage in response to a post saying they're going to improve their coverage?

I'm saying that if vodafone and o2 end up sharing their 3g networks I'll still see no 3g coverage around here since both networks only provide GPRS in this county

I find anywhere along the river in central london has next to no 3G coverage, a mate told me this was due to national security reasons within the city and they block it but I find that hard to believe.

That's garbage, it's particularly o2 which is rubbish in the city. My Vodafone 3G dongle gets decent speeds most of the time and even o2 are capable of provider decent service if you happen to be up and about at 4-30 in the morning...

Does anyone know how Orange's network is comparing? My O2 contract is coming to an end, and if Orange is any better I'll move over.

Get a cheap Orange SIM and test it yourself?

That's assuming your iPhone in unlocked by O2, but at least you'll know firsthand.

All their posters claim "the UKs biggest 3G network" so there's every possibility it will be better but like everything it's just speculation until proven.

It's not unlocked, but I can get them to sort it. Might give it a whirl.

Well, coverage is good but performance can be hit and miss unfortunately. I prefer it as it's a bit slower but does consistently work in London (unlike o2). Orange have never been a big data network (only one left who don't have a pay and go mobile broadband offering for instance), this might work for or against you, difficult to know until you try it.

I have full 3G signal in my house in peterborough. I just tested it and i have 533kbps down and 348kpbs up. That is depressing.

EDIT: I also have full edge signal, 59kpbs down, 47 up. Again shocking.

I have both an Orange sim (Contract i use with my iPhone) And then i still have the o2 sim that came with the iPhone (Payandgo)

Altho the Orange sim is in the card 90% of the time the o2 card still has 5months free internet, so i use that to download 200mb apps and songs and movies and streaming live TV and stuff on my iPhone.

And too be honest i dont see much (If any) differance between both signal and speeds between o2 and orange.

I returned my 3GS because I get 2 bars at home also no 3G signal, going to wait for vodafone to release the Iphone, or wait for the next gen.

I get a full 3G signal at work (Guildford), but find 80% of calls aren't connected. This is extremely annoying as I'm trying to sort a house move. If I turn off 3G and drop to EDGE people can get through. Ridiculous.
