i've got unlimited 3g usage in my phone contract and i want to use my N95 as a 3g modem on a laptop. It looks pretty simple to do just connect to the internet through Nokia suite but the internet is really slow.

Apparantly o2 restrict the connection speed and there are settings on the phone that can be changed to increase the speed. Anyone know if this is true and what i need to change ?

I actually think it's a restriction of the Nokia modem software rather than any network provider, limiting it to about 460kbit.

If you open the Nokia modem connection properties (from windows network connections), you may be able to increase the maximum connection speed, but I don't know if it actually increases throughput.

ive changed it to 921600 but like you said it might not work because ive noticed the connection is not that fast on the handset before connecting it to the laptop

The windows software reports the speed incorrectly, run a speed test if you are in a 3.5G / HSDPA area and you'll see that you get a greater speed than that quoted on the popup.

my 3g connection is slow on the handset so it'll be slow on the laptop. what i'm after is some settings that apparantly speed up o2 3g conenctions on the handset.

I always noticed that when I connected a phone to my laptop with bluetooth the speed sucked, when using the data cable I got the full 3g speed...

i got about 500kbps connection speed. didn't do a speed check but seems to be browsing quite fast. i didn't do any download as i only got unlimited internet usage. so it's about 250mb inclusive. hopefully O2 won't find out i've been using my phone to surf internet with my laptop

im using the usb data cable

read about the poor o2 fair usuage policy earlier today and the fact they dont allow you to connect it to another device as a modem like a laptop :(

Half the problem is the access point, the one that o2 give out is very restrictive, and even compresses images to keep data down. There is another access point name though ;)

yeah same over here but they didn't stop us from doing that right? mine still connects fine and browse without any problem. Don't think I've done 200Mb so probably they won't notice

ive got 30% discount i need to apply when i renew my contract in january. so i'll prob go into the shop and find out how strict they are with the fair usage and charges for going over etc etc. also still need to find out why my connection is so slow. maybe i'm still stuck on the 128kb limit they had at one point
