I'm currently on a legacy O2 8meg connection which is run through the o2 box 2 as a modem and a phillips snu6000 handling wireless. When downloading the first xGB from Steam or newsgroup will max the line, then the connection will suddenly drop either completely or the speed will be drastically cut. I have never received an overuse notice from O2 so I don't think its something on their end, so its either BT's line which seemed fine or the modem/router combo being asked to do too much.

Would a new modem/router solve this I was thinking the TP-Link with ddwrt or the Billion 7800N obviously the TP-Link being half the price is attractive but the Billion seems popular and iirc it'll work on cable and adsl2 so has that in its favour.

As far as I'm aware traffic shaping and management on ADSL occurs at th remote end so in effect you'd still be connecting at the same speed, just that your throughout would suffer.

If your modem is reconnecting and resyncing it's probably more to do with your modem or the line itself having issues.

Check for errors in your modem and also check your stats, maybe your SNR is a bit on the low side or something.

My netgear sometimes needs a reboot if I have a particularly heavy few days of torrenting and what not but it usually means a reboot every other week and I am a fairly high user at >100GB/month.
