My contract with O2 expires on March 8th, so I need to give 30 days notice, i.e. from Feb 8th.

But I asked if I could get my PAC no. earlier so I could move to Vodafone asap. I'd obviously still pay the remaining month of my contract, but I just want to switch sooner rather than later. However she said there would be a disconnection fee if I requested a PAC before Feb 8th. Basically I have to ring up exactly on the day to do it right..

Seems like a load of guff to me. But can I get my PAC no. now, and move to Vodafone asap?

This sounds all standard fayre with these companies..

One easy way around it is to independantly take out your new vodafone contract (checking they can swap you to your new number when you do get your PAC), and just have a temporary new number for a few days until Feb 8th, then apply for the PAC code, and as soon as you get it, get Vodafone to swap it over...

All places have contracts and automated 'systems'. so possibly to only way to get a PAC is to terminate the contract on their systems, it doesn't sound terrible to me, you do need to give them 30 days notice, which may work in your favour, as they should get your PAC code to you just after Feb 8th, even though your contract doesn't end until March..

When a PAC code transfers (within 5 days of being used), the original line will be cancelled.

As such, if you want to leave early, they want you to pay for your last month up front, as per your contract.

Easiest option is finding out if you can port at a later date on a new contract (Orange let you do this) and have a temp number for a while as stated above.
