Does o2 normally charge a month in advance or charge you afterwards?

All contracts usually charge a month in advance regardless of provider.

They charge you afterwards - assuming it's a normal contract, such as 18 month one with a free phone. It is like that because you signed a contract stating that you will pay, even if you run up a £100 bill going over your limits (because you agreed to those terms and conditions).

You only pay in advance when you have no obligation to pay. Such as PAYG with automatic £10 direct debit every month.
