O2 Orbit phone

o2 have offered me a free Orbit pda phone with Co-pilot for free as an upgrade. Have any of you used this phone yet or this co-pilot software?

Thanks
I have the MDA compact and Co-pilot 5.
Co-pilot is pretty good.
The MDA compact is similar to the Orbit but the Orbit runs WM5 and has built in GPS. The Co-pilot they are offering you will be Co-Pilot 6.
I'd like the offer they've given you, what is the monthly tarriff?

Had the phone a week now, wish I'd bought it sooner.

Co-Pilot is good, probably not as good as TomTom but as a freebie you really can not complain.

The trackball takes some getting use to, but once you get the hang of it it's a god-send.

Really have no issues with it at all. The only tip I'll give is go and buy a 2Gb MicroSD card to put Co-Pilot onto because you'll probably end up filling the memory of the phone within days adding extra utilities.

What tarriff was it on? I am due a new phone in 8 weeks.

i'm tempted by this phone as well, the only thing that is putting me off is the fact i've haerd it has a slow processor, and wonder how laggy this would make the operation, e.g. using the OS etc.

The other phone I was thinking of is the other O2 XDA on the market, the Mini S, or the SPV M3100 (which does look like the XDA Mini S)

What do Orbit owners have to say to me please?

Actually, XDA Mini S is the older generation to the SPV M3100. There are some differences between the two, some very noticeable and others less so.

M3100 has 3G, a much clearer and brighter screen, much better speech call quality, the side jog wheel which makes navigation much easier, much faster processor, and so on.

If you were going to get one now, definitely get the M3100 (or the Vario II from T-Mobile, or the v1605 from Vodafone which are all the same phone except different exterior casings).

Went for the 12mth £40 a month tariff which is more than enough for me. Ordered it on the Monday, arrived on the Tuesday.

Depends what you want out of the phone. The O2 ROM is notoriously rubbish and there are many many people at the XDA forum who are saying flashing it gives a massive increase.

But as a general PDA/Phone, I've had no issues with speed.

will it invalidate warranty to flash it?

I'm pretty sure it does yes, but you can backup the original rom. Legally though I'm a little in the dark over it as 'technically' you'll be using a ROM that was supplied by the original manufacturers of the device so I'm unsure how you'd stand other than perhaps paying a fee to restore the phone. But there are loads of utilities available to backup the rom and I know of only a handful of stories of people who have ended up with a brick.

cheers jhmaeng, may I ask why would you go for the M3100 over the Orbit?
Sorry, I meant that I would go for the M3100 over the XDA Mini S, which is the other one you mentioned on the post that I replied to.

As for Orbit vs. M3100, the Orbit obviously has GPS built-in and the trackball seems a nicer way to navigate than even the wheel. On the M3100's side, we have 3G (HSDPA, in fact) and a QWERTY keyboard, which I found really really useful for firing off long emails when I had nothing else to do. But also the M3100 is substantially thicker, so I'd say that ultimately, it's down to whether you want the keyboard or not - if you do, get the M3100 and if you don't, get the Orbit.

On Orange, their M700 is just like the TyTN but smaller and without keyboard. The M700 is also I believe faster than the Orbit, but lacks GPS. Might be worth a look if you don't want/need GPS built-in.

But M3100 is an improvement in just about every single way over the Mini S - it's a pretty old phone now and not really worth getting, given that it's not even particularly cheap.

slightly off topic but if all that is stopping you going for the orbit, try out tengo input software. It is ridiculously quick and easy to use, and best of all free from www.free.tengo.net

jhmaeng - I am not sure about the keyboard, I think i'll have to have a try of both of them in a shop. think i'd prefer a thinner phone really and that TenGO software quoted above looks to make using a stylus for text entry very easy indeed, so I suppose I'd have to try both and getting a better feel for them and how easy each is to use.

One thing thats bugging me about moving away from a C500 whcih has actual buttons is that I still dont know how well you could type a text in, say your car or a nightclub, or a busy bar where it's too hectic to pull out your stylus and start tapping. Does that query make sense to you?

pany - thanks very much, that tengo software looks amazing!

That unfortunately is the problem with these Windows Mobile Pocket PC handsets.

You might think that getting a M3100 (or Vario II) would help over come this problem but it doesn't. I've got a Vario II and if I'm texting, I have to use 2 hands when using the keypad. Sure, I could do it one handed, but it would take longer to type the text and the handset doesn't feel very secure one handed with the keypad out.

If thats your main concern then I'd seriously look at alternative handsets.

Two options, both of which I've used, both of which I can confirm are actually pretty good.

First is this:

Only downside is having to turn the phone 90degrees, but surprisingly easy to use.

And the second is this:

Which is the iPhone theme, again VERY nice and surprisingly easy to use.
