After being on o2 pay and go for neally 6 years I have recently decided to move to a contract, as im spending about £20 and sometimes £30 a month on a 6030 handset)

I found out about student contracts and inparticularly the Orange 19 (£19 for 50 anytime minutes and 500 texts a month) Great I thought, i phoned o2 to see if they would match it as i have been with them for ages. They couldnt do anything and one guy from (i think) pakistan even told me that 'i cant do owt if yer number int showin up on the system' (good customer service there)
I rang them back and it was so he obviously didnt understand me as it was found by someone else!

Ive ordered the W810i online and am taking my number with me.
Dont get me wrong o2 has been good in the past but they have just lost what i feel is a valuable customer for the future because of their mongols on 'customer service'

I see the 810i has a 2mp camera, will this be anything like the canon A60 for night shots, if it is i wont get another digital cam (was thinking of getting a powershot A510/530) how many pics does it hold with 2mp settings?

thanks

looking at the W800i and W810i i see there are a few differenes. Does the 810i not come with an mp3 player but has a memory card supplied where the 800 doesnt?

I'm sorry to say, but networks don't really consider people wanting a < £20 contract as a 'valuable customer' anymore - I mean what are they actually making from you? It's just another customer on their books that isn't making them any money.

While I agree that you obviously wouldn't be their best ever customer if you spend £20 a month, they're being very foolish by being downright unhelpful - they are still making plenty of money at £20 a month (add it up over a year or more). I think you were just a bit unlucky, I've had very helpful service from O2, and they do seem to value my custom despite spending very little. I got a K750i for £25 on a £19 per month contract in June last year, including 500 texts and 50 minutes, and have now been offered £100 credit and a reduction to £14 per month on the same tariff on another year's contract (obviously taking the credit and discount in lieu of an upgrade) - works out at less than £6 a month for 500 texts + 50 minutes over a year's contract, which isn't bad at all.

On the other hand I can just about understand that from their point of view you're essentially a new customer (PAYG doesn't seem to count for much) - and they have pretty good deals (in terms of cheap or free phones) online for new customers anyway.

The camera on the W810i is pretty much the same as that on the K750i I think - it's pretty decent for shots in daylight, and printed as normal photos they look good. But the "camera light" isn't anything like a real flash, and nightime shots are grainy. It's also easy to get a blurred picture. The autofocus is fairly good, and overall it's better than most other camera phones, but it's still not in the same league as a "proper camera". Perhaps the K800i, due out in the next couple of months, which claims to have picture stabilisation and a "proper" Xenon flash might change that. Still no optical zoom, but I guess the size of a phone limits that sort of thing!

One thing to consider if you really want a cheap deal is a cashback deal online - look around and you can get things like a refurbished K750i for completely free (after cashback) during the minimum contract period. (Found this offer at E2save.com) - needs some effort (cancelling insurance and line rental, sending off cashback claims) in order to get it right, but a free phone and some free minutes and texts for no charge at all is always a good thing!

i was spending £20ish a month on payg with o2, moved to orange on the £25 a month student one they had (before they changed everything around) which gives me 1000free txts and 120 anytime mins, but my last bill came to £70 quid, its hard to keep your bills down on contract!

o2 used to do 50mins + 500 texts for £19 as it is what i started off on, but they reduced it to 200 texts around september/october time. currently on 200mins + 500 texts for £15 (12 month half price, 12 month contract :D ) but either going to move to tmobile or orange come next upgrade due to the amount of difficulty i've had with o2 when last upgrading. some of the flext plans look really good
