How are people thinking of putting a simplicity SIM in the PAYG one? It wont be possible unless the iPhone 3G has been unlocked before they're released. When you get the iPhone 3G on PAYG you use the SIM card that comes with it, not one you are already using. It's the same SIM for both PAYG and contract, it just gets activated depending on what you want.

Are Simplicity SIMs 3G enabled anyway, or just EDGE?

If ZiPhone can do it, then unlocking will be easy peasy, 5 minutes. Not enough hassle to warrant not getting PAYG and unlocking.
But if you factored it in with the total cost of ownership being about £20 different, it'd be something you'd take into account. Depends how long you keep the phone, I suppose!

I'm planning on sticking with Orange, so I'll be getting a 16Gb on PAYG... whatever it may cost!

I'm assuming the PAYG one can be unlocked for any SIM. Get rid of the activation one, get your current one in and off you go. Sod PAYG.

Simplicity is just web-surfing so depended on handset, if its 3G it will be 3G if its EDGE it will be EDGE. I don't think it matters.

I know what Apple will do, seal the SIM card in on the PAYG so you can get it out! Haha! :D

Valid point. Plus, some people believe that Apple will charge for the updates on the PAYG phones like iPod Touch owners.

My boss just got a text on his iphone saying he can have a new 3g one for free :S

and had an * and below said

* 18 month minimum contract term

He already has an 18 month contract with 02.... can any shed some light on whether or not the phone is free and whether or not it would cost him any extra to upgrade etc.?

It has already been stated that some people on the current O2 iphone contract can upgrade for free but will tied down for a further 18 months.

As above but the web is not unlimited. I think the limit is 200-250MB.

Actually they removed that limit several months ago. The current restrictions in place are that you're not allowed to use it for VOIP, streaming video, P2P or as a modem for another device like laptop computer.

That's assuming the phones are locked in the same way as the original iphones. Now they have all the different tariff options they may just do a network lock rather then a sim card lock. Also seeing as they're allowing people to upgrade for free it will be a bit of a nightmare having to transfer everyone's contracts onto the new sim, far easier to just have the network lock so they're able to put the old sim straight in their new phone.

Mine gives me 3g or HSDPA depending on the area i'm in.

Good news. I will have to EDGE more. Even if it is pants! :p

From what i've heard from o2 and Apple, it's network and SIM locked, so only the iPhone 3G SIM that comes with it will work.

I'm wondering what to do. I've got an unlocked 8gb iJesus at the moment and I'm using it with my o2 £35 a month tarriff (600mins, 1000txt, unlim data). Now I've still got 12 months contract left, so I'm thinking of going 'legit' with my iPhone, changing to the iPhone tariff (I know i'll lose 500txts a month but thats no bother to me). That way I'll be able to get the 16gb one when it gets released and pawn off my old iPhone to a family member. Don't have to worry about the hassle of unlocking, etc and it's convienience factor.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a good idea, or your dog, cat, granny, children and your childrens children are going to have an iPhone.

As said before, don't want it turning out like the 3310.

It wont, most people dont like the touch screen, I know quite a few people (usually woman) that don't like how bulky it is also. Plus most people do see it as a bit over the top for just calling and texting.

Unlock the baseband. It's been done before, it'll be done again.

Thats what I'm hoping for.

That's is very true.

Anyway, hurry up and allow pre-orders God dammit!

I want to know something

I am at £45 per month iphone o2 contract customer. I can upgrade for free or pay 59quid for the 16gig (which I am going to do)

Reading this from o2.

"Don't need 2 iPhones!

We want to make sure you find a good home for your existing iPhone once you upgrade. If you've a friend or family member already on an eligible O2 tariff, they'll be able to transfer to one of our new tariffs for iPhone. If they're not already with O2 or on an eligible O2 tariff, they could get one of our new iPhone Pay & Go SIM cards."

If you do not sign someone up to an o2 tariff, are o2 going to request you send in your current iphone?

I want to keep mine if I can due to my job which is heavy work and can damage my phone.

I seriously don't see how women complain about the iphone being bulky, everyone of them carry around a hand bag and they "throw" their phone in the bag, literally ( I cringe at the thought of an iphone being thrown into a handbag full of make up/keys and other pointy objects). The bag is HUGE compare to the size of the phone and my trousers pocket. How can they complain that the phone is bulky is beyond me.

That said, most girls i know only have Nanos, and not even ipods, but surely one less thing to carry is a good thing.

Why not just get the PAYG sim card and leave it as a PAYG phone then? OR am i missing something?

Depends, if you have completed the contract, then it is yours. If you haven't then they can ask for it back. Most of the time they won't, its useless to them and will cost them to get it back. I think you could keep it.

Plus Ray is right, you can just shove a PAYG in it and say your cat uses it.

Never seen a girl with an iPhone.

Ah the iPhone is a tough critter, I don't have any covers and it still looks good. Very suprised at how durable it is. My K800i was falling apart by now.
