Just a heads up for anyone whose contract with o2 is coming to an end; sadly the news isn't great.

I had:

18 month contract (ending now)
Blackberry Bold 9000
£25 a month thanks to a £10/mo discount
600mins + Unlimited o2 to o2 calls
1000 sms (didn't use very many)
Blackberry bolt on (so web & Blackberry email etc)

I wanted:
HTC Desire
600 mins & o2 to o2 calls (or around 900 mins if the o2 to o2 calls weren't an option)
Everyone does unlimited SMS now
Web access (1gig or so)

...O2 could only offer me pretty much the same deals as on their website, despite me being a 'Tier 4' customer, whatever that is. There was no real scope for any messing around - the retentions department don't seem to have any ability to flex what the computer says.

PAC code ordered; o2 are the least most competitive in the market at the moment for the HTC Desire with lots of minutes.

So, if you're on o2, time to shop around :P

They are shocking to be honest. I think they like idiots who get a 25 a month deal and end up going over incurring costs. If you're responsible with your minutes they don't see you as a good customer. They seem happy to let good custom go to waste which I find quite shocking. When I phoned for my last upgrade, i.e. to get a discount or good deal, they wanted me to pay an extra £10 a month for the same deal, ok o2 PAC code time. I may go back but only if they offer something worthwhile, probably sim only with 1 month rolling contract so I can jump ship when I like. Remember if you're changing networks make sure, as in test not look at their coverage map, that you get good coverage in your area, home, work, mates, town etc.

Yeah, good custom in the form of never an unpaid bill in 7 years of being on contract with them. I suppose though that since I rarely went over they pretty much broke even on me, so there isn't much point in fighting tooth over nail to keep me. That said, surely one customer of negligible profit is better on your books than the competitor's? Churn rates and subscriber numbers are the big things that investors refer to, right?

..or am I wholly misguided?

However, yes I'm checking the coverage in places I normally am, it all seems good across all the networks. I guess if I order a new contract online, I've 7 days to try things out and to cancel the agreement if things pan out badly.

I left O2 several months ago, was with them since 2001 when they were BT Cellnet, having spent a lot with them.

Recently their deals for existing loyal, good spend customers were rubbish. They used to offer me great deals, but recently they are a shadow of what they used to be.

I spent a lot too, roaming, through work, but still wasn't enough

Yep their decent retentions deals are over. They won't offer anything decent anymore.

I am in the last month of my £35 a month tarrif, with £15 discount, so only paying £20 base contract. No chance of such discount anymore and it looks like nobody else is getting lucky either (check moneysavingexpert for example). I got through to a decent bloke in retentions who said he can't believe how many people are leaving them at the moment.

Will be getting my PAC code shortly and using someone like dialaphone etc. Some decent deals on smartphones atm.

If it weren't for my line rental discount expiring, I might have waited to see if o2 themselves would notice this and become a little more generous with their offers. Ah well.

Ive been with o2 for years and I have always had good deals, sometimes upto 40% off on upgrade time, so really good

HOWEVER, ive been due an upgrade for months now, this week ive been in contact with them to see what "deal" I could get, to summarise they couldnt even match a standard new contract price with vodafone, t-mobile etc, nevermind beat it! absolutely shocking that an existing customer cannot even be offered an upgrade that matches that of a new contract elsewhere.

Pac gained, moved to vodafone yesterday

I've just jumped ship too to Tesco Mobile SIM only. The best they could do on a Desire for me was a £30 tariff and about £15 for the phone when you can get it free on a £25 tariff elsewhere. I've already got a Desire by other means so in a but of a unique situation but they really didn't do anything to keep me.

I left them a few months a go as they didnt sell the desire and the contracts were more expensive even with the 30% i got from work. I was with them for 5 years or so. Im now currently on orange.

But for me O2 and Voda are the only two worth going with in terms of reception, adn O2 are more competative than Voda. = I stick with O2.

Well i use to have a contract with them. Just left 02 for T-mobile.

must have rang 02 Retention team atleast 15 times for an upgrade then i gave up. They can't seem to do anything.

The deal that i was on with 02 was:

200min
400texts
02 - 02 calls
Free landline calls
Nokia 6300
£10 per month

Everytime i asked for the same deal but with out the phone (sim only) they couldnt do it. Cheapest was £25 quid. No chance.

02 really suck at the moment. Few of my mates have left them beacause they aint giving out the upgrades.

Not as far as I can see for their high-minute smartphone deals; it looks to me as if Vodafone are proceeding to wipe the floor with o2 :)

Thats the funny thing, Tesco mobile uses o2 network so o2 clearly could give out better deals and still make a profit.

My contract with O2 is up at the end of next month. I called their customer service a couple of weeks ago to discuss potential upgrades but they refused to give me any information and told me to look at the website.

As mentioned above Tesco used the O2 network infrastructure (I believe) so I'm going to go with them instead now.

Sure feels like O2 aren't putting much effort into keeping some of their existing customers at the moment. I guess they must be more focused on signing people up to the sky high iPhone deals!

I was also with o2 since day one (back when the were Genie) and left them a few months ago due to similar reasons (plus the fact their recruitment policy seems to stiplulate "people with IQ below 10 only" these days..)
Happily with Orange now.

Same story with my attempt with O2 retentions. Was with them something like 14 years, since the Cellnet/Genie days with my first phone being the Ericsson GA628.

The retentions team wouldn't move an inch from the standard deals, using the excuse of my broadband would cost me £5 more a month. Requested PAC now with T-Mobile.

The Broadband retentions were fantastic though, explained to them that I wanted my MAC due to the phones team not being competitive and so it would be cheaper for me to move to Sky. They offered me a £5 per month discount if I signed a new 12 month contract, which keeps my broadband at the same price as it was.

Boo Mobile, Yay Broadband!

add my 2p
o2 are not on there own with this.. I have contracts with O2 T Mobile Orange and Vodaphone

T Mobile dont give anything anymore.. my main contract was with them and no amount of 'coaxing' from me would shift there stance
and I had 2 contracts one was £35 a month and the other was £30 they would not budge an inch so after 6 years with them as my main provider, I shifted to the one's above and I also have O2 ongoing for 4 years and they wont give anything
the orange and Vodaphone are about 6 months in so cannot comment about those 2 yet

These companys have no customer loyalty at all so it is not just O2 doing this

I'd intended to leave o2 recently after hearing all the retention stories, but they actually offered me an ok deal so I stayed :p

I asked about the Desire and the guy was straight up and said they've been told that under no circumstances will deals be made on it (probably as demand is high).

But they gave me an alright deal on the X10 instead: 500mins unlimited texts + internet and phone for free £24 per month, only downside was a 24 month contract.

The problem I have is that only O2 have decent reception at my house and when I tried t-mob for a week it was hopeless. That said, I'm getting more and more dropped calls on o2 as their network collapses upon itself!
