O2 scrapping unlimited data

I just checked my data usage and it was around 750mb for the last ten months. I use data services on my phone heavily for the usual things (map reading, RSS feeds, email, browsing, youtube) and I find it hard how anyone can download massive amounts of data each month.

exactly...

exactly...

A single episode of a 30 min podcast can be 20 meg easily, an episode or more a week and 3-4 different podcasts and there's 100 meg a week before doing anything else. Add on some streaming video, maybe purchase a Cd from amazon MP3 store, you can rack up the data fairly quickly. Just because you don't use a lot doesn't mean those who do are doing so illegitimately.

This

I use my phone all the time, didnt give it a second thought because i was on an "unlimted data" tariff.

I've gone back now and checked my o2 bills, i hardly ever go over 200mb per month. Those claiming 750mb in a week and stuff, have you actually checked your bill to verify this or are you guessing ? because i was genuinely worried id gone over 500mb all the time, but ive not done it once.

I have a iPhone 3Gs, 12 months into my 18 month contratct. At £35 a month with 600min 500 texts and unlimited data/wifi.

Im about to pay to get out of my contract early for the iPhone 4 - why i hear you ask, well i love tech. I don't drink or smoke, but i do like tech :)

I was really worried about this new data usage, but then i thought a little. Upon inspection of my O2 bill i saw i had use a pitiful 27Mb in 3 months. OMG how low. My phone is always on with data roaming on, facebook silly games email notifications all updated all the time.

Then it hit me, i have wifi at home, so it uses that there, and wifi at work thats how im keeping my data down.

So im not too bothered now.

Whilst i appreciate some users may find this a problem, but with all carriers going this way, we dont have an option but to comply :(

^^all this. questions:
1 )why are people streaming vids on their phones? i would have though most (and i would say sensible would preload vids)
2) why would you realistically want to use spotify on the move...again preloading music?

i know people might do this occasionally and thats fair enough but i wouldnt ever want to do this religiously like im sure many people do, that does seem like using bandwidth for the sake of it and i can then sympathise with networks who dont have the bandwidth/infrastructure...

anyhow. i would class myself as an average user in a 3g area that has wifi at home and i would say 500mb is plenty for a months use.

It's not something that applies to me really, I'm not away from a proper screen that often and I have free WiFi at Home and Uni. I use around 1-200MB a month over 3G through browsing on the Bus, looking up product reviews or recipes in town and showing the occasional Youtube vid to mates down the pub.
I can however see that if you're at work with a restricted/monitored internet, having 3g on your phone would be a godsend during the breaks and you could easily use a substantial amount. 17MB/day doesn't stretch very far.

Last time I checked I'd used about 50mb a month on my android, I don't generally stream music or video though... Most of my apps are installed in WIFI areas so it's mainly just the sync charges and a few apps and maps here and there.

Is there any chance of cancelling a contract over this. I have cancelled a contract for free before when orange changed their t & c's on call charges.

Any chance of doing that here?

Just found this, suggests I may be able to?

You may end this Agreement by giving us written notice if:
(a) we break this Agreement in any material way and we do not correct the situation within 7 days of receipt of your written request;
(b) we go into liquidation or a Receiver is appointed over our assets; or
(c) you are a Consumer Customer and we increase charges for calls, messages or data that form part of your inclusive allowance or your Line Rental Charges or change this Agreement to your significant disadvantage in accordance with paragraph 9.2 of the General Terms, provided you give us a minimum of 30 days’ written notice (and provided you notify us within one month of our telling you about the changes). This does not apply where the increase or change relates solely to Additional Services in which case you may cancel, or stop using, that Additional Service.

So as mentioned previously.. im not on an Iphone contract and instead bought my 3G3 PAYG and put my sim in it, then got the 'unlimited' internet bolton.

Ive been wondering how these changes effect me? does my bolton now go from unlimited to 500mb? (ie: crap!) or since ive had it for the majority of my contract period will it remain the same?

Tried to get answers from o2 on the phones and in a store and they had no idea. at. all.

Pretty fail customer services there.

500mb wow how will i ever live......

this is a non-news story really, no one in their right mind should be using that much a month and if they are then their using there phones for something dodgy.

anyway it seems it only applies to the iphone , which is similar to what AT&T are doing.

Don't you ever use your phone for youtube streaming etc? will eat 500mb in a few days I will :P

not sure if the answer I was given is correct or not, but I was in town and asked in the o2 store what would happen after the 12months were up on my simplicty contract(I'm into the 4th month) I was to leave it as 30day rolling. the guy said that it'll stay as unlim data as it'll be the same 'contract', will have to wait and find out next febuary(as that's when my 12month contract ends).

I don't quite understand the 1 october thing, is it that all new contract afte 24th will get unlim data till 1st october or that if you get a new contract by 1st oct it'll be unlim data?

I got a call from o2 couple of days ago about my home broadband(I'm only on access as don't have o2 llu at my exchange(only llu is talktalk), said I'd used 51gb last month and that they'll be keeping an eye on my usage(if it happens again they'll give me the mac, thought the usual policy was to reduce speeds, and if it continued then disconnect/mac).

apperently the fup is upto 40gb(well she said under 40gb when I asked what the max accepted(sp?) usage was, not 100% but I seem to recall having gone over 40gb on a couple of occasions in the last 17months without being called tho most months it's been under), so can't really do too many large app updates/podcast etc downloading on my desire over wifi at home. I watch tv shows and football(don't have sky sports or espn) online.

Used my phone for Spotify and youtube, 1 week of having it and im up at 450MB data usage...

Its easier than some people think to use up so much data.

When you think about it in the grand scheme of data transfer etc... 500MB is a pathetic amount of data nowadays... even on the worst broadband connection available (512Kb) you can download that in less than 2.25 hours and most mobile broadband (with decent signal strength) seems to operate at about twice that speed... very easy to go over a 500mb limit.

I thought the ame way as you in regards to the ease of reaching 500mb when my Vodafone internet was facing this change and this didnt quite materialize for three main reasons. First,I was often in a situation where my phone can use the local wi-fi for net so that must have saved a fair bit. Two, my Desire also turned out to be lacking the ability to play flash so I couldnt even stream iplayer videos properly. And three, the internet from Vodafone seems considerably slower than the wi-fi so the frustration often makes me use it as a last resort option.

Virgin say they are considering upping there unlimited from 1gb to ????????
as so few customers use it and they are hoping to draw more custom fron data users.
You can go over your 500mb just using the "Free" gps softwate on Nokia smart phones!!
