o2 shockingly changing the Ts & Cs- anything I can do about it?

if you didnt want people to store data about you, you would...

buy lots of pay as you go phones, using a new one each day, destroying the phone and sim cards completely after each usage...

you would not have a contract with a major phone company, using the same number and phone daily....

in honesty, the tech is already in use by some phone companies to track where you are, didnt orange pilot the usage of direction software that worked out your location based on the time taken for a ping type request from all the base stations in your area..... chances are o2 are just letting people know now... remember, this data will probably be used to work out where coverage needs to be improved

But I'm not a terrorist or miscreant

an who is? do you really think a terrorist is going to get a contract and tell o2 of btw im a terrorist so obviously you have to monitor my calls etc.

Do you ever complain about how 9/11 happened, how the terrorists managed it? ever think tighter security should be in place? what about the london bombings? if say the government knew the terrorists had mobile phones and if they could get informatin easier about where, when, who they are calling, what times, how often etc this sort of thing could be stopped?

can't beleive smoeone is complaining that o2 is now making it possible to help stop terrorists, even threatening to end there contract! this is probably why terrorists can manage to do what they do, because companies don't want to make there stuff mroe secure as customers complain and leave loosing the company money.

just my silly rant

Yep, just a silly rant, they have been able to do it for years, these changes have no effect on what our security services can and cannot do!

I dont mind officials such as Police/MI5 checking information on how/when/where/why I use my phone if it help prevents crime.

But what I AM dissatisfied with is the fact that O2 are allowing other companies (creditors etc) to monitor me. That it completely unacceptable IMO.

The technology exists to discover the rough triangulated location of most mobile phones regardless of whether the phone is switched on or not.

The phone has to be on to be able to track it.

This isn't a change to stop terrorists. If MI5 want to find out the location of a mobile phone they get the relevance clearance to get it. This change in T's and C's is about O2 getting the info.

Yes the networks can access this data and they have used it for years for the location software and stuff but this looks like O2 wanting to collate the data.

this country is pretty much the worst in the world for privacy - if this was happening in america and over here we'd all be laughing about how they were giving up their civil liberties... but it's not, is it.

i'm doing nothing wrong, but this scares the hell out of me. as mentioned before, i'm well aware that the "government" has been able to do this for years and for mi5 or whatever to do it doesn't bother me so much, if they have the required permission etc. this however, makes it all too easy - and yes, includes giving the information to non-government organisations, which is scary as hell... i don't want targetted advertising, i don't want companies to decide whether or not to give me a loan based on my past spending over the last 20 years etc (which, as this is coming in now and i'm only 21 is entirely possible and feasible). i might spend the next five years making mistakes - and fives years after that/15 years after that... i don't want what i did to have any influence (other than credit rating) as i want the decision made on how i am then.

i.e. i won't be the same person in 20 years as i am today. well, if i am then that's a sad situation. but i think it's unlikely i will be, i'll will, in theory, be a lot maturer and a whole lot "wiser". this will give companies an summary of a large portion of your life (don't forget, that it's not just the raw data they will have, but advanced data mining tools that will essentially make the decision for them.

i love technology, and i wouldn't want to live without it... but there are decisions that i don't want any software making. i just wish that i, and others of my generation, would start to realise that it is now that we have to make a stand and do something about it. but it's hard, without really knowing what the consequences will be. all i know for sure, is that one day we will look back on this and regret doing nothing... or not care, as we will be so used to it that we will simply be slaves to the system. that's my fear... a fear of flying/spiders/heights or anything like that is _nothing_ compared to a fear for our futures.

Excellent news. What number do I ring to cancel my contract due to these changes to the TC's then?

Been needing an excuse since my reception is bad to naff all at home and I have no landline :(
