Hi guys,

I don't live full time in the UK. I bought an s7 edge in the UK and put an o2 sim in, when I got back to the UAE my local sim would not work. Apparently the phone is now locked to O2 and they won't give me the unlock code for 1year. I cannot believe what I was told. How can they do this and more importantly how can I fix it?

O2 sold you a subsidised (and SIM locked) phone with a PAYG sim they expect you to use for a year or more. It's pretty normal practice.

I purchased the phone from Samsung store for £599, no network no nothing!!

I cannot believe it can be locked to O2, it seems crazy that inserting a sim into a phone can make it locked, but equally crazy that Samsung will sell me a region or sim locked phone from their store. I'm fuming and really can't see how it could be legal if inserting a sim makes it locked to that network. My father called up o2 and this is what they confirmed!

Wow you're right, but is seems even if you got past the SIM lock then Samsung also region lock these devices:

This isn't something initiated by O2, I would be calling Samsung and getting the code as you bought the device from them.

I will do that, I really cannot believe they would do such a thing, I really don't think it's unusual for people to want to use different country sim cards in a phone!! I don't think this is right at all!

Do you think a normal unlock code will work?

Worse thing is I got this s7 because my s6 randomly stopped working and I had to pay for an upgrade to s7 or wait 10 days to wait for repairs!

so you purchased a sim free phone direct from the supplier which then locks to the network you first use..
surely when you buy a phone outright without a contract ( or without a pay as you go subsidised deal ) it is up to you which network or networks you use.. you are buying the phone outright so this really is just another chance at making money!!

I would be asking them if at anytime did they explain to you that the phone would lock to the first network you used with the phone. You have purchased the phone outright not tied to a contract so how can they make you pay or wait a year for an unlock code? I would see the point if it was an o2 contract phone that had not been fully paid for but surely they know you purchased the phone outright from Samsung!!

The phone was not sim locked but region locked. I had to make 5 minutes worth of phone calls on the other sim and now my sim card works!!!

Ah yes the odd region lock that Samsung does. As you found out a 5 min call with a SIM from the region it's from makes it properly unlocked. Still strange why Samsung does this.
