Hi all.

I could probably find this info in other threads but I haven't been able to find this specifically.

I am currently with O2 (on an old BT Genie contract) and I want an iphone, but I don't need/want a £35 a month tariff.

I would like to get the Simplicity Online 15 (£15 a month) tariff but I would also like an iPhone.

If I bought an iPhone could I just buy one in an O2 shop or online without a contract (they would obviously think I would activate it at home) and then what exactly would I have to do to get my Simplicity Sim working with it?

What version is the iPhone likely to come with, as I understand there are currently issues jailbreaking/unlocking 1.1.3 (is that right)

Could someone give a step by step break down of what I would need to do, ie.

- Get simplicity
- Buy iphone
- jailbreak

etc etc.

Any downsides to this? Would I need a Data bolt on to make it worthwhile as the data would probably cost quite a lot right?

Really? They are loads more expensive though.

I thought you could just buy one in store without a contract, with the idea being that you set the contract up at home?

Is that not right?

Nope, you can either buy one with a contract, or get one from ebay or france (when the unlocked one is released there, unless it is already?).

Or not buy one :p.

I have done this, exactly this.
Brought iPhone from CPW, happily :p, came home jailbroken/unlocked for 02 sims only, went 02 shop, brought simplicity sim, currently paying £22.50 a month for the mins /texts, and unlimited internet, which is perfect for me :)

So CPW sell the iPhone without a contract?

I take it £22.50 a month is the Online 15 with Data bolt on?

Was it easy to jailbreak/unlock?

Hi, get yourself over to the Mac forums and look at the iPhone sticky.

No iPhone is sold with a contract, that is set up in iTunes. The only thing you will be buying is the handset on it's own.

It is very simple to unlock and use a simplicity sim card in it, loads of people have done it and I use a o2 PAYG sim in mine.

Although if the iPhone comes with the latest firmware (version 1.1.3) out the box, then it cannot be unlocked.

If you are quick enough, chances are you could come home with a 1.1.2 version. Most people here have still been able to get 1.1.2 iPhones.

The data bolt on for £7.50 is good, presuming you will be using EDGE.

Hope this helps.

It makes me laugh that people reply to threads without having a clue whatsoever. There are even threads on this very forum telling people how to jailbreak phones!

If like Justin correctly says you are unlucky enough to get a 1.1.3 version then you can return it within 14 days.

I suppose I can just ask what firmware version it comes with :)

I am going to call O2 retention to day to see if I can get a better deal on a new contract with no phone upgrade.

They offered me £25 a month with 200 mins/400 texts plus £100 cashback, which works out at £20 more for the year compared to the Simplicity 15, so I am a bit annoyed considering I have been with them for about 5 years. This was only the upgrade line that offered me this though, so hopefully retentions can offer me something better.

Once I have that all sorted I think I'll get an iPhone. Still not 100% yet but I am seriously tempted.

Yup, don't forget a 16GB iPhone is being released today. (Just been announced) for £329, even more tempting.

If you asked what firmware they came with i'm pretty sure they will refuse to tell you if they think you're going to be jailbreaking it.

Not sure I would need that much space tbh.

AWESOME. Just got off the phone from O2 retentions, and they have given me the Simplicity 15 tariff effectively, but with £100 cashback (so it isn't simplicity, new 12 month contract)

200 Mins
400 texts
£15 a month
£100 credit so I won't pay anything for about 6 months odd.

Works out at about £6.50 a month :D

I think I can justify an iPhone now and I'll treat myself to the data bolt on.
