O2 vs Three

My giffgaff (which uses O2) 3G speed test today shows:

Down: 5741 kbps
Up: 1600 kbps

No idea what I would get on Three around here (Croydon)

Doesn't look that fuzzy anymore. You can still tell it's compressed though, but not at the level where it's annoying.

I was about to post a little more on this thread then I realised it was resurrected from 2012 .

Sorry to resurrect this but that's not true; O2 have been allowed to use 900MHz for deploying 3G for some time now.

However, I entirely concur that O2 have terrible 3G coverage and even where they have coverage the data speed is vastly inferior to Three.

It may well have been true the year and a bit ago when that reply was posted though

I was looking for threads comparing Three and O2 so that's why I across it.

Yes 3 uk seem good offer for phone and mobile broadband.. i used o2 years ago but when price riseso high then i dumped o2 and went for three which offer good deal so bought 10gb allowance mobile broadband sim for my samsung n8000 plus great coverage also fast speed... happy with three uk as o2 is stink

I must be the unlucky one. O2 were all over the place for my data so I swapped to 3. At times I think 3 are worse. London Bridge is terrible, my GS4 often misrepresents the quality of signal, Hampstead is even worse than London Bridge, signal indoors is patchy, coming back into an area with signal (e.g. inside to outside, underground to surface) the signal can take quite a while to register with the network. I haven't tested the speeds recently but they weren't that impressive. My 3 in London experience is rather disappointing.

Inside my office (not too far from a window) now with full signal (H+); 88ms, 1537kbps down, 60 up.

I am in similar views to xibinim above.

I switched from o2 to 3 about a year ago, on a 12month SIM 600 tarrif. My main reason for switching was that o2 had been going down the pan for ages imo and their signal was so poor everywhere I went. I had my iPad on 3 and constantly saw 5 bars everywhere so why not.

3 on my Find 5 phone is perfect in my home town (17mb). Sadly at work (Northolt, Middlesex) it sits on 0-1 bars and is practically useless. I've heard so many horror stories about 3 CS that I've repeatedly delayed contacting them.

At the end of the day I'd recommend a 30 day PAYG sim just to see how good their signal is in your general area.
