Just got a call from a nice woman at O2 saying that I've breached my download limit for the month and that if the same happens next month she'll be terminating the service.
I have moved back into my parents house on a temporary basis but it is me who pays for their internet. It was unlimited when I signed up 2 years ago but apparently that's changed.

I haven't being downloading excessively by my standards, but apparently I've used up 60GB of bandwidth in 4 weeks.

Seems silly in this day and age to have bandwidth limits, that is all for one person and it's all LEGAL downloads. Programmes from iPlayer (HD), youtube HD, xbox live games on demand, iTunes movie rentals, and as I've said, this month hasn't been a lot for me.

I've asked O2 for an 'unlimited' package but apparently 2 years on, ASDL2 is still not available in morecambe. :p

Anyone know of a good, unlimited adsl1 provider?

To be honest if they changed the service they should have informed you about it before you agreed to continue using the service.

I've been using Be* for over 2 years now and they've been absolutely brilliant, having said that I'm leaving them next month because I want to get fibre optic from BT for faster speeds.

We'll Be* and O2 are the same. :p

I've had O2/Be* at two houses that I rented in York on ADSL2+ and between 4 people we would be usually push 1TB a month and had no trouble. It's just ADSL1 in morecambe because we're still using string and tin cans for phone lines...

change to sky :)

Would my parents have to change their phone number?

Looking up Morecambe on Samknows shows Sky LLU is available. Don't think you have to change to your phone service? Could be wrong.

I'm going to check that out now then. I can't wait to get back to York, I'll be on my 100Mbps connection on my return with unlimited downloads. :(

I'm on BT line rental and have SKY LLU Broadband. But even if you went with SKY phone service i'm sure you are able to keep the same phone number.

Tell O2 to take a hike and switch to TalkTalk

Request a MAC from O2 and tell them that you are going elsewhere - you will probably get a 50% discount on your next six months payments.

I would suggest that you go with TalkTalk anyhow. They have a fantastic offer at the moment which expires in the next few days - < £20 for landline & broadband for a 12 month contract :)

You can retain your BT 'phone number.

I shall call O2 in a few days, we can't afford to be without internet for 10 days while sky activate adsl2+ at the moment. It's looking like £15 for 'unlimited' usage for them.

As for talktalk, sorry but I wouldn't put my parents through the hassle of that company. I'll be moving into my new place in a few months and they will be left to deal with it when things go wrong. :p

Someone recommending TalkTalk.....that really is a first in my experience. Everyone I know who is with them moans at the lack of speed, disconnections and dire customer service. They are cheap for a reason...

*edit* beaten to it...

As much as I hate to suggest it - go with BT the "unlimited" package has 300GB FUP which is more than enough for anyone.

He's on O2 Access, hence the warning for abuse.

Sky is the only real choice unless you want to pay £££ for decent IPStream.

Be* can put you on ADSL1 mode too, I've had a few mates switch from 02 switch to Be* and even though they're the same so to speak, they found Be* to be much much better in terms of service, speed and stability.

baaaaha ha ha ha
Really keep clear of talktalk there worse than O2.
Serious question . . .

Do any of you actually have any real, personal, practical experience of TalkTalk or are you just basing your observations on something you have read / heard . . . somewhere . . .

As I say, that is a serious question.

Personally, I have had experience of about four or five different ISPs; until something goes wrong (which is infrequent), they are all just about the same. When things go wrong they are without exception, absolutely useless -
  • "Yes, I have got my modem switched on."
  • "Yes, it is plugged into the 'phone socket."
  • "Yes, I am using a microfilter."
  • "No, I am the only current user."
  • "No, I'm not currently downloading the entire music and film catalogue of the universe."
  • "Windows XP SP3 - does that make any difference at all?"
  • "Yes, it is patched."
  • "A Dell Latitude Laptop directly connected to the modem - so what?"

Right..TalkTalk...how many do you want. Worst one for me is my mum, TalkTalk bloke knocked on door, hello we can give you blah, blah and blah including broadband. My mum replies with haven't got a computer why would I want broadband. Ok, we can give you free calls etc. etc. etc. I'll check for you and tell you the best deal what's your number. Mom gives number, deal comes back, worse than she's on...man goes away.
10 days later, phone goes dead. Rings BT who say "TalkTalk have your contract now, they have informed us you want to switch".

Took me 4 weeks to sort out, including having to threaten legal action because they refused to give permission for the phone line to be released because my mum had not paid, and they wanted to take her to court over non payment. I shall not continue as it was a grade a ****up from a company, and when we investigated, they are well known for doing it as the guy gets his sign up bonus. They had done it to hundreds in my mums area that week alone. The company denied they have a problem, even though we can prove their salesman falsified signatures etc. to get a "sale". When ringing them and being passed around the monkeys they employ, it took me 4 hours to get somewhere, which of course we were charged for...enuff said?
