Obama 'to reverse stem cell ban'

I'm glad obama has undone all these stupid things that have been in placef for Donkeys years in the US. I reckon the first person to set up something that atleast half resembles an NHS in america will be on of the greatest presidents ever.

Good news indeed. A minor point though, Bush didn't ban stem cell research, just government funding of stem cell research.

The news isnt that promising to be honest. Chinese trials of stem cell therapy have proven to be dubias at best. There was an article on the BBC website a few weeks back about one of the stem cell patients developing tumours made from the cells which really isnt a good sign.

The idea is pretty good but the results and applications so far have been pretty much aweful

Im quite aware of that thanks :)

The initial results arent living upto expectations though

To get a drug from idea to market takes about 15-20 years.....

All it needs is time and funding and it will become a very powerful tool in modern medicine :D

average is 10 to 15 years to get a drug to the market, leaving the company a few years to claw back the money of developing, testing and trialing it before the licence runs out (20 year patent from day of discovery)

Big difference between trying to get a cell to turn into one of the main tissue groups and take the place of whats needed in a specific patient (this being the primary problem with stem cell research, no 2 people are the same etc). I agree with them trying to see what they can do with it, but im more confident in something else being gained out of the research instead of a direct medical use with the cells themselves.

You can trust the Chinese with their dubious record of valuing human life if you want.

I'll trust the Spanish (along with a team from Bristol), who've successfully grown a new windpipe (over a cartilage frame) using stem cells.

Yeah growing things has been done for a while now but using them is a different matter and will be a problem for many years to come. Stem cells are ideal from a Pharmaceutical standpoint as they can be turned into just about any cell we need so research and development on new receptors and human testing could be all done in a test tube.

Personally thats what I'd like to get out of the stem cell craze at the moment but the applications of the technology and research are still unrealised in terms of potential scope.

I work in the biomedical industry, and a chap I work with who is a stemcell expert has just been awarding a massive contract in the US ,with stem cell stuff....things are moving faster than you ever hear about, perhaps iv said to much already, lol.
