Looking at getting a decent reader without breaking the bank for a 2001 E46

What do you guys reckon about this android based reader using this bluetooth device?

Anyone have any experience with them?

Yes I know carsoft is awesome but it's OTT for me

Seriously, get carsoft. A generic reader is no good as presumably it will lack support for the myriad of manufacturer specific codes.

Are you ever likely to have an iPhone? If this is a possible future consideration you might want to consider a WIFI ODB interface rather than a Bluetooth one.

That said, that bluetooth one is very cheap - I'd be inclined to buy one just to try it out (In fact, I'm tempted to do just that myself :P ).

Not likely to get an iphone as Android is just too awesome :)

How many standard and bmw odbii specific codes are there? I'm sure this device only reports on the standard codes - if it also reports on the bmw codes then that is a very good deal.

Anyway please keep me updated when it arrives and how well it works MikeHiow

According to the reviews, for codes this device does not have it looks them up on the internet.

Whether that means it Googles for it, or actually looks them up on some database I do not know.

If it is actually ODB2 then probably. I can try it in my MK3 when it arrives if you are unsure.

I bought the exact same bluetooth device for the lulz and it works fine with my Mondeo, that Torque Android software displays all sorts of stuff. It works as a code reader too

I have an ELM 327 cable and use the scantool software on my laptop. I've used it on a Ford, Renault, Seat and VW and it's worked perfectly everytime.

It's paid for itself many times over up to now!
