well i've finally got round to oblivion, my first thoughts are "oh good im in for a long haul here ;) "

i've done a lot of research, bought the guide book, decided (foolhardy?) to play the OOO full version.

i chose a character i thought i would identify with. Nord-warrior birthsign
strength-endurance-blade-block-heavy armour-armourer-marksmen-restoration
which is pretty sensible researched stuff.
trouble is with the OOO mod, level 1 is too lowly for the mainquest, i tried the arena and got to brawler but find i could do with some spells, damn they get quick and spank me! i like sneaking and lockpickin and theiving but my oafish nord gets caught! i've been to sinkhole cave and cleared it, and most road bandits seem whuppable....
trouble is my level bar has hardly budged!
i need to start some questing but need the levels to climb faster to get me to the apprentice spells & combat techniques etc.

im now considering changing my character to a fast, lightly armoured battlemage with stealth/thief attributes as i've found i actually quite enjoy that rather than clanking round in full armour and fleeing a dungeon after a one orc confrontation!

im happy to persevere with the OOO mod because i believe the rewards wil be greater in the mid levels onwards. as the NPC's have fixed'ish levels i can really get some pwnage in.

however like most blinking bewildered beginners any advice from some Oblivion (OOO) hardmen would be great.

i think i've read too much rubbish about attributes and levelling and some really good down too earth advice would be very much appreciated.

don't get me wrong im not whining about the game being hard, i expected that. i'd like to play it from the start and enjoy it rather than getting halfway thru and starting again.

many thanks.

That pic is a stonking 1.5MB... re-scale it to JPEG asap dude it's a ridiculous size.

That character seems decent, though perosnally I prefer Dark Elf for the mix of melee and magic they provide.

Warrior is a good class for beginers, just hack and slash really, one thing, buy lots of potions, because as a warrior you wont be able to heal yourself well.

Obscuros oblivion Overhaul

http://jorgeoscuro.googlepages.com/ooo1.3readme.html

a levelling mod which lots of fixes and other incorparted mods.

keeps the npc's at a set level relevant to their game content.
ie bandits by the road might be l1, a dungeon baddy might be 20+

hence its flippin hard to start with as you need to be l20 to even have a chance with the main quest.....
however once you levell up you can lay the smack down as a mere goblin will still be lowly like he should!

errm potions. duh yeah maybe i need tons of em! trouble is they're bloomin expensive and i can't loot the dungeons as im too weedy level 1!
argh catch 22.

maybe i'll try some freeform quests and thieving to get some dough in.
and look for dobbin at the priory... ta for that one.

any one know any really quick ways of raking dosh in? bearing in mind i can't pick hard locks yet :(

and is OOO really sloooooooooooooooooooooooow at levelling?

p.s how does the screeny rate? (bearing in mind its reformatted and resized)....thx to Richdog :p

1280x1024 everything hi except shadow detail (low) HDR but alas no AA (nvidia 7900GT o/c'd)

got some LOD/texture fixes in there.

Screenies are nice. As long as you've got that nice environments one (natural environments?).

OOO is ridiculously slow to level, which takes all the fun out of it for me. Seems to me that people who play like that are too stubborn to just remove OOO and actually enjoy the game :D (wind up :p )

I've just started again actually with a straightforward mage. After playing with extras like light armour, marksman etc. it was pointless, I just want some straight magic powah! It's actually a bit more interesting than that, as I've gone for high elf/atronach. Sounds silly at first, but once I've got the remaining 50% magic absorb (from spells or equipment, rings etc.) he'll be totally immune to magic, absorbing all magic cast at him, and be a high elf without any of the usual elf elemental weaknesses.

whole game looks better on PC with a few tweaks

looks HERE and HERE for uber widescreenshot
Well yeah, if money were no object then PC>Consoles in every way. But it is an object, so im very happy with how Obliv looks on my 360. ;)

But what happens if some dumb troll swats your elf with a club Joeyjojo :D

is OOO really that slow to level? i mean are we talking hours or days to increase?

i don't mind slowness for quality, but not too slow. after all if i wanted to grind levels i'd play some rubbish like WoW!
please tell me its not a grind

He'll be lucky to get that close tbh  :D

The real answer is we'll have to wait and see, I haven't played a pure mage yet.

No first hand experience with OOO, sorry. I'm passing on other people's opinions as my own :o :p

Edit: apparently it comes with a mod for changing levelling speed. I might install OOO but change the levelling speed after playing a bit. Sounds like the best solution.

i'll look into that, i don't want to be doing grinding repetitive chores just to go up a level. i'll see if i can speed it up.
if not i'll reinstall oblivion with a host of fixes and content mods and change role to a battlemage.
dark elf with attributes for blade combat and destructive magic should be fun.

i just want to crack into some quests ;)

i 'spose the trouble with this sort of game is because it can potentially take you months...years? to play fully. you really need to choose carefully at the start to make sure your character is strong at the end. if you have'nt played how can you know?

i almost enjoy the research, looking into mods etc as much as gaming.

I suggest you use the OOO "Lite" version, which isn't a noobified version of OOO, it's more like a modular version - you can pick, choose, and edit the various aspects of the game. It lets you modify the levelling speed. IMHO the levelling in vanilla OOO IS a grind, it'll take you days, not hours, to get increases. Boost up the speed at least until you are level 5 or so, and have decent skills in your primary weapon. That way, you'll be able to fend for yourself out in the wild, but you'll still have that sense of danger, as plenty of things will still be strong enough to take you on! Then you can think about reducing the levelling speed to something steadier, giving you time to enjoy the game.

Oh, and if you're hard/mad enough, the dungeon you can see when you first come out of the training sewers has a pretty l33t katana at the end of it in OOO. You have to take on a very tough necromancer and a crazy-tough ghost warrior, but that sword will stay with you a very long time :)

You'd have to be insane to try it at level 1, but I did, and I made it :D I got to the final room, crept around and unlocked the door at the far end, leapt from the shadows chugging every health and speed potion I could get, snatched the sword from the casket on the altar, and pegged it out the door, up the stairs, into the next chamber and jumped down the drop back to the dungeon entrance with fireballs and a screaming ethereal knight bearing down on me.

One of the most fantastic gaming experiences I've had in years :D

Is that sinkhole cave on the way to Chorrol or the fort with a dungeon underneath.

either way i stuck my head into each, had a protracted swordfight with a guard, won by a hairs whisker than legged it when the baddies got wind.
but then i had no, health, no potions and level 1.

my Nord was strong of arm and thick of head :D
im trading him in on a Dark Elf battlemage character.

I'll deffo look into OOO lite, i like the idea of modular installing as there are tons of really sweet things in OOO i'd like to keep.

I haven't played in about 3 months but both "Full" and "Lite" versions used to come in the same download.

Yeah, the dungeon underneath the white ruins you can see when you first exit the sewer :) If it's a bit too tough, there's a few things you can do.

There is a settlement called Aleswell almost directly North of Imperial City on the ring-road. All the townsfolk are invisible. Go into the inn, and try to talk to some of them. It'll trigger a small quest-line that, once completed, earns you the right to stay at the inn whenever you want, free of charge. Do make sure that when you speak to the mage in the tower, you Persuade and Bribe him until his Disposition is past about 74; then talk to him again, and he'll give you a ring of protection to wear while you use his anti-invisibility scroll. If you don't get the ring, you get stuck with a curse that takes forever to go away and is a real pain, it's quite buggy, especially if it hits your Luck stat (because there's no Restore Luck potion).

The free room in the inn has a small chest of drawers in it, which is "safe" i.e. it doesn't reset its contents every few days i.e. you can leave your stuff in there without worrying that after a day or two it'll all disappear. This quest line effectively gives you a free house and doesn't require any fighting. Aleswell in will then make an excellent "base of operations", as it were, from which you can make forays into the surrounding countryside while still knowing safety and a loot-box are nearby.

From the sewer mouth, head directly towards the ruins you can see (i.e. Northeast) and keep heading in that direction past the ringroad. You should stumble on an Exhausted Mine. Full of goblins, easy kills :)

Start the Thieves' Guild questline if you want to earn some money and enjoy a lot of excellent sneakery into the bargain. That way you can equip yourself better, and should easily be able to handle the first few levels of the Arena.

Or you can wander the wildernesse and just explore, and enjoy yourself. Keep an eye out for any big nasties, and if one comes in range, peg it back to the ringroad and run around looking for a guard on horseback!

By the time you're level 3, if you've collected plenty of potions and you're brave, resourceful and persistent, you can handle the Vilverin dungeon (i.e. the one you can see from the sewer). But you WILL have to try and avoid the ghost warrior. Those things are evil.

Good luck, and have fun!

Does OOO work with Knights of the Nine? I got it for Christmas and I'm planning on starting afresh with it, but I'd like to use OOO if possible.
