Oblivion - advice sought for a new adventurer (OOO mod)

well i decided to uninstall OOO.
i checked out the lite version which maintains the core and there is an add on to decrease levelling time.
the lowest is 2X levelling speed of vanilla. (twice as long to level)
tbh i wanted to get into some quests without having to mooch around trying to build skills by grinding.
i've already got a load, but i downloaded a ton more mods.
i think i'll play the standard vanilla levelling system with lots of fixes, extras and modifiers etc.

i seem to remember being told to play vanilla oblivion then halfway thru try OOO.
i know why now!

im not bothered though, it gave me a chance to try a character type and find out what i wanted to be. i'll deffo go the battlemage route. after playing dark messiah the combat is somewhat bash and hope.
the freedom, scenery and immersion more than make up for it though.

Funny, I've just installed it :D

Stuck the full one on to see what you were on about. It does take forever to level skills. Might have to do what you have and just use every component except for the levelling one. Not sure yet.

Gone pure mage. First thing I did after getting out was to run into a load of wolves. A guard tried to save me but I died pretty quickly :D It's a lot better actually IMO. Came across a bear later and it was actually quite scary. Ferocious like a bear should be at lvl1 :p

Exactly! :D

I remember getting attacked by a bear in OOO and running, really running, for my life. It does make the game harder but it's worth it for the sense of real danger and uncertainty.

As for the issue of the levelling speed, combat in OOO is much more protracted than in the main game. Because you are using your combat skills far more for each fight, you actually level up almost as quickly as in vanilla Oblivion.

It is good to play vanilla for a bit first, to get your bearings. But when you come back to OOO, try to ensure you make a character build with a weapon skill of 50+. This is enough to survive and cope with combat, provided you use due care and discernment. Concentrate on that combat skill until you hit Expert (75). Then you'll be "safe".

So, for the first few hours of play you'll have the real sense of danger, fear and apprehension that confronts an inexperienced and unproven adventurer stepping into the wilds for the first time :) By the time you hit level 5 or 6, however, you should be feeling a lot more confident.

I don't like grinding, but I don't consider OOO a grind. Grinding is doing a boring and repetitive activity over and over until you level. You CAN sit in town in OOO casting a spell over and over for hours to level your Conjuration or Restoration, or sneaking round the same house in circles, or whatever. You CAN also do that in Oblivion. But OOO certainly is certainly unmerciful, so yes, you will do much better if you get some way into vanilla first to get your bearings and learn some tricks :)

OOO is hard, but very rewarding. It removes that sense of being "uber" you get in vanilla, the complacent assumption that you CAN just wade in and attack anything you meet and expect to win. When that expectation is lost, then when you start to lose a fight, you don't feel cheated, you feel threatened, and respond by running away and regrouping instead of hitting quickload.

Enjoy Oblivion, it's a massive and massively ambitious game that will absorb a very large amount of your time for many nights to come! :D

UBER is how i wanted my character to feel :D

yeah im going to play a couple of guilds in vanilla, get some skilz then re install OOO for the main quest.
luckily its the sort of game that could take me upwards of a year with my limited gaming time.

its nice to come across a game so open to the gamer and modders.

When you come out of the main dungeon you should think about delivering the amulet you have, you do get a bit of a reward for it which makes the first few hours slightly easier. I did all the side quests before i did this so didnt get the benifit.

If it's anything like Morrowind then Levelling could be a real nuiscance, it took me three days to get past level one and everything I met killed me, including rats. Very enjoyable game though. Sadly I have a copy of Oblivion but can't play it until I build my new computer, can't wait.

re-installed and changed character.
now;-

Dark Elf
The apprentice
Willpower and Intelligence
Destruction
Conjuration
Blade
Block
Light Armour
Marksmen
Sneak

+ about 40 mods.

Its fantastic now, the sewers were enjoyable, i emerged and headed to the ruins opposite. Killed everyone then headed to the Ruins with the dungeon nearby.
Really enjoyed that, used a combination of all my Dark Elfs skills and looted the place leaving a trail of dead marauders and goblins.

when i look at my stats journal i can see things actually increasing! still only level 1 though because i have a spread of skills which levels slower. hoping they will provide more benefitt in the long run.
I still feel weak but no longer useless. I feel like the world is there for the taking not an uphill grinding struggle.
This game rocks

p.s.

for anyone struggling with an Elvish name try this site;

http://www.chriswetherell.com/elf/

i spent ages going thru The Silmarils and Lord of The Rings looking for suitable names.
Obviously the "Dark Elf/High Elf" context is different in Obliviion but if you put your Name into the generator above it turns out some interesting propositions. gave me a great name.

I started oblivion a while ago, got a lvl 18 marksmen, went down the line of sneak thief with light armor and marks, no melee bonus's, this was after 2 10+ chars that were a mage and warrior, i find the marksmen a lot easier to play, cos if you go marks, you become a apprentice which doesnt affect your fatigue, then light armor will protect you enough so you dopnt die in 3 hits.

also, marksmen means you can stealth and get a shot in doing 3x damage takeing about 2/3rd of the health from mobs then 2 or so final arrows takes em down, meaning by the time they get to you, they are on the floor being looted :)

try to do some rumor quests as well, some really decent gear and attribute lvling at the same time.

im about to embark on the dark brotherhood quests.
my arena killing spree got noticed and i was paid a visit
i had'nt intended on that quest line, i had my quest order all planned out. but when the game springs you, you gotta go along for the ride.
im quite looking forward to it. fortunately my sneak skills are coming along nicely ;)

wrt the marksmen aspect i've had to add a mod.
i was really looking forward to the archery combat, being as its a sport me and wifey plan on doing in the spring. however when it took 15 arrows to kill an arena combatant i thought that a bit much. i would'nt have minded if game physics meant armour could deflect them.
but oh no! sure enough the very hard to kill corpse looks like a hedgehog upon death!
considering a war bow can put down a fully armoured knight at over 200 yards i decided that a drop more realism was required.
so i've dropped in quad arrow damage (and faster arrows).
i tried mighty bows but that too was like firing drinking straws at the foe.

im glad i have a wife who nags me.....
this is the sort of game i'd take a weeks sicky off work for :) :)

That can happen in vanilla too, unless you build yourself a tank- and since the whole point of building a tank is to excel at combat, you can't really complain if it gets a bit easy :)

tested yesterday, i can confirm "arena loot" and "quad arrow damage + faster arrows" are worthwhile downloads.
ever got annoyed that if victorious in the arena, you could'nt loot the vanquished and keep the good stuff and flog the rest? i now have some nice weapons and a lovely elven bow. best defence (imp city) love my patronage too :)
the bow mod makes bows worthwhile. opponents now go down rapidly when a clothyard of wood with a steel broadhead travelling pretty damn fast thwacks 'em :D

however my arena rampage has come to a halt. my nefarious activities have turned me to the darkside....
i can't wait to get my dark brotherhood robe and armour
i may.....just may have to download a lightsabre mod.....

any want to buy bf2142? unplayed since middle of december.
