Oblivion crashes :(

I have a crossfire system (X1900 master and X1900XTX slave), 2gb ram and 4800 cpu. Can run with full settings perfectly but still get the annoying microsoft "error" message 90% of the time when i shut down (doesnt seem to have happened with the 6.4 drivers yet though). Also had it randomly crash maybe twice in the 30-40 hours played, both times while using fast travel and this may have been due to the fact that i was still trying to sort out my memory timings on my system.

Its not too bad in regards to bugs but it seems that if you do get a problem it is a big one. Only other problem i had was not being able to Alt+Tab but i think this is more due to the ATI drivers then the game.

i got 2gb, sometimes it crashes when shutting down but not all the time. crashing during gameplay, i've had 2-3 CTD's in 250hours, 186 quests..

some people are overly harsh on Oblivion, it's a huge game and it's easy to see the dev's put their hearts into it.. you can't play 200 hours with x3 unpatched, you will be very lucky to play 20 hours without a game stopping bug.

i'm harsh with games.. i'm quick to uninstall and say "never again" and i've not got that with Oblivion. it's been one of the best games i've played in years.

mine crashes when shuttin down sometimes just annoys me cause i have to sort it out before i can do anything else

I'm getting crashes at any point during the game when its " doing " somthing, loading an area, in a fight (if I kill someone with a damage over time blast it nearly dies, if I hit 3-4 people with it then it stutters to a halt while it reads the hard drive), from what I can tell its when the game trys to accsess some of the data on my hard drive, or atleast MORE data than at other times...., I notice that my hard disk reads more before the game crashes (open case, close to ear, not a bad drive or anything like that). maybe its somthing to do with Vmem

I have gotten many errors on close that require me to reboot cpu. I get around this by ctl+alt+del out of game and closing the process in task manager. Helped me keep my sanity.

I have started getting a few crashes when loading a new scene. Worked fine until I completed the main quest and now it seems to crash randomly when loading.

maybe its linked to the saved info (like lenth of game played) cos its gotten progressivly worse with my main char but I've noticed that my new char it happens less often

From what I read in your post, you're trying to run Oblivion with all the settings right up on full on that system? Should that even be possible to get a decent framerate on that system?

It was running fine on whatever 'ultra high' actually is - the game set it at that when it started. Not sure if that's actually full graphics but it ran nicely on ultra high.

My housemate is also getting resets on Counterstrike now. That's hardly graphically demanding so I really don't know what's going on here.. Not sure if something is broken. The RAM is the same as he had in his old system so doubt that's faulty.

Anyone know if there's something worth RMA'ing? I'm beginning to question the stability of ATI graphics cards. I've always been an Nvidia man myself.

Don't knock a whole companies selection of cards because your rig is acting up. I have had 64 ddr/9700/9800/x800 and now an x1900 and they all worked great with just the odd driver bug here and there.

mine has suddenly decided to crash everytime the guy in a warriors guild says "goodbye"

god knows why

actually ive just used an older save game and now it crashes every 2 min or so.

Fine up to this point and now its screwing up, I havnt changed anything and im about 6 hours into the game.

I had to cheat with a setStage command in *** shrine of dagon (MQ) because everytime I killed a particular acolyte my machine rebooted

Spoilt it a bit for me.....

today i installed .NET 2.0 and the mod manager.. now, i can load a game but not save as it just crashes, even a new game with no plugin/mods.

i've got a 250 hour character and 60 hour character (i.e. i've played the game a fail old bit!!), how many saves in that time?? hundreds and during that time perhaps 5-6 ctd's at an autosave area although the autosave file was fully written and functional, where as now any save just writes 250-300kb and it's corrupted.

  :(

Right, I think I may have stopped the resets by removing the wireless card from the machine. I remember on the standard drivers for them they'd cause crashes in certain applications. It's a Netgear 54mbps wireless card.

However, now after about an hour of play just then I get a new error which closes the game down: 'buffer overrun detected' and then something like 'the application cannot safely continue and must be closed down'

New one on me. Anyone know what this means?

EDIT TO ADD: 'a buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state'

Ah, no.. The resets are back.

Solved! Took one of the sticks of RAM out and it ran all afternoon without crashing. Very odd as they were fine in the previous machine. I'm thinking it may be the slot or something - I'll be trying the pair of sticks in the other slots to see.

But anyway, thanks for all your contributions.

Further devlopments. The stick of RAM I assumed was faulty works fine now - but only if it's on its own. If I put both in (any slots) then the crashes return.

So it seems that both are fine but won't work together in this particular machine. They were bought as a matched pair and work fine together dual-chanelled in my PC. So.. anyone know what could this be?

Crucial Value 2x512MB DDR400s

Curious. What motherboard is it, and what timings are you using memory-wise?

The board is an Abit AT8 ATI RD480. As for the timings they're just whatever the default/auto/standard is. The owner of the machine has ordered Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 and hopefully they'll work fine together.

When doing the recover a book quest from the count of skingrad, When I move the mouse it crashes to desktop as soon as I enter the castle grounds. Never experianced no other crashes before this.
