I've never really played an RPG before, but I thought I'd give this a go after all the great reviews everyone, but can I be the first to say

WTF!!!

I managed to get out the dungeon after what seemed an endless run around of doing nothing but kill rats. Next I trape for miles across landscape to the monk (killing some crabs on the way). Next, another mamouth trek to the find the emperors' son (killing wolves one the way).

I feel like that situation where your the butt of a big joke that everyone knows about except you. Surely there is more to this that hacking at crabs, rats and wolves? Has anyone else who has never played an RPG got into this at all?

Use fast travel if the distances bother you. Once you start to get quests and begin to close the gates it will get a bit more interesting for you.

uve jumped right into the "main" game, go around the city and rob some places and meet some people, then go join some guilds and ull have loads to do ;)

I'd never played this type of game before. For weeks prior to it coming out, I'd seen the thread about it, wondered what all the hype was about and decided it wasn't for me.

Screenshots look 'nice', read a few reviews about it and all this "armour", "magic", "alchemy", "spells", "non-linear", and other RPG type words kinda bored me. Decided in the end it would be a waste of money.

But, like a lemming I am, thought I'd buy it and in the very least I could always sell it on or return it if I didn't like it.

So I bought it, it arrived on the Friday and for a total of nearly 115hrs I played it almost constantly!

It gets better, my word does it get better. The 'joke' you think you're the end of turns into a feeling that you're the only one who can save this digital world that's been created. The crabs you see are really the least of your worries as someone who you attacked on one city is still out to get you several days later.

That innocent looking vase you stole from that house whilst the owner was asleep, it'll land you in gaol one day that's for sure.

That person who you keep seeing at the church, same time, every day, talk to them, they have a story to tell and they need your help. But helping them leads to been a right royal pain in the butt for someone else and you've decissions to make as you're faced with the choice of helping your original questor or realising they may not speak the truth!

It's an incredible game, stick with it, talk to people, close your eyes turn the stick on the controller in a direction for 5 seconds, open your eyes and just keep following the horizon. You're guaranteed to meet more than you think.

~J~ - I'm exactly the same as you. I usually hate RPG style games (though I did like WoW a bit) - I hated Morrowind...I found it incredibly boring and quit after I really got anywhere. I bought Oblivion to give it the benefit of the doubt (and just to see how it looks on my new rig lol).

Coming from a person who doesn't like RPGs - this game is incredible. There is so much to do (millions of quests, exploring etc)...at least play until you get to the first oblivion gate...it really picks up from there.

I'm still amazed at how every tiny object is in the game (I mean, you go in someones house and you can pick up everything...from a piece of fruit, to a pot of flowers. The attention to detail is simply amazing.

Bear in mind that unlike other RPG's, the world of oibobiboibln levels up along with you. I was in the same situation after a few days of playing and I was well annoyed because the wilderness was so sparse and empty. I ran around for days and ran into nothing but sheep, deer and bandits.

I'm lv30 now and do run into a great deal more...especially the dreaded BEARS.

i'll be honest, i couldn't get into this game either and i've now put it up for sale on the MM. maybe i've been spoiled by the likes of WoW, because I find the complete lack of people to interact with a real bind, and only serves to make this game even more dull than it already is. i mean, there's hardly any npc's either and half of them just look at you blankly anyway. i also find that of late, if a game doesn't instantly appeal to me then i lose interest. and i'm afraid oblivion didn't instantly appeal. granted i may have got into it had i persevered, but that's not me i'm afraid.

so i'm with you on this one mate. if i can't get shot of it on MM it's going on the bay!

In all honesty, when I first started playing Oblivion, I was incredibly underwhelmed by it. The main plot is naff quite frankly (although the quests can be interesting within themselves), the supposed radiant AI is really nothing that special and you never find yourself impressed by anything it does (unless the novelty of computer characters staring at walls gets you off somehow), the caves and the oblivion worlds are very dull and repetitve, and the combat isn't quite as good as I thought it would be.

Put those flaws aside however, and give the game a longish try, and you realise that there are quite a few good points to it. The sheer scale of the overworld and its detail is great. As are the amount of quests, items, skills, spells, and roles availble to play, and the open-endedness of your ability to choose which of those things you wish to do. Without the variety of MMO games, it's definitely not as fun doing general non-combat stuff in the game, but the fighting and sneaking type quest are ace at times.

I certainly wouldn't call it a fantastic game, or even one of the best of all time really, but it's still a good game, worth a decent play.

I found the side-quests and faction quests considerably better than the actual main quest tbh. The main quest was unbalanced and rubbish. The faction quests and side-quests seem to level somewhat properly with you, and being the sneaky sort I am, taking place in dark caves really did wonders.

However the main quest is ludicrously unbalanced, as is the wildlife. The wildlife is more powerful than many of the boss characters. The lions are as fast as my horse and they pounce at you repeatedly doing massive amounts of damage. The bears, well one swipe and your staggered - so they keep swiping until you're dead (all while you're staggered again and again and again). The will-o-the-wisps are unkillable if you're a melee character because every hit you put on them, they take some of your health and put it on their own, along with their own attacks doing the same. Also summons always seem to be able to see you no matter what. I would hazard that if you immediately teleported to the other side of the world, they would slog it across the entire world directly to you. The leveling thing, along with the bugs really destroys the game. Its as if they tested the whole game at one level and then just added the other monsters without testing them. At levels 1-4 everything is fine, but break past 4 and it gets gradually worse. Break past 15 and it becomes ludicrously unbalanced.

Fortunately the faction quests and side-quests are awesome :) Thoroughly enjoyed almost all of them, especially the Dark Brotherhood's 'Whodunnit?' quest. Pity about the main quest, but 60+ hours spent outside of it means I feel I got my money's worth :)

IMO one of the best games I have every played, Been on it for 30 hours and still very addicted, not even started the main quest yet so cant comment on that, for me its right up there with Final fantasy 7!

It took me a couple of days to get into it aswell. I've played it loads now and haven't even gone near the oblivion gate after I died once, the guild quests are keeping me happy as it is.
