Oblivion - My initial thoughts.

"I do not know you, and i do not care yo know you!" Right... cya! :p

Yeah, i was just walking somewhere minding my own business , then someone gave me some lip, i couldnt resist shooting an arrow in his face.

There was a quest where the guy has been fining people in this town for the most minor things, i got told to go see the woman who had opinions on him... but i couldnt find her house at first.

then when i saw him walking back and forth i thought... ive just gotta kick his ass

so when i did.. i took his nice gear etc,

then when i found the woman she wouldnt talk to me :(

Joining the dark brother hood is very cool

I love this game, best game I have played in the last few years.

I am a dark elf assasin/sniper and doing very well for myself :)

Think I'll try a mage or a pure fighter soon though.

Haha you're very trigger happy. You gotta stop killing everyone you like the armor of or you will mess up your side quests lol

It is annoying though... i was doing one quest where i had to collect a number of things for a NPC. Nearly collected them all, and my quest updater popped up saying i could no longer complete the quest because the NPC has died! Oh i was mad!!

take a peak at Moosey's excellent thread for mods, Oblivion is quite sub par until you make it playable with mods (i found this anyway).

Very good once you get into it though, Morrowind is very good as well

Oblivion will be remembered as the first proper RPG that attempted to combine sm3, clever A.I, pc shattering graphics, voice acting and a great world to the masses before their hardware was ready for it.
This game has set the bar that all other RPG's have to beat if they want to be great.

First of all, its not a 'proper RPG', its an action-adventure RPG.

As an RPG, BG2 did everything better. Characters, depths, story, all the key RPG elements.

Oblivion has set no bars in terms of gameplay, only in terms of graphics.

That particular character is meant to be like that. And you have the option to give him a more legal fitting punishment. But I'd advise you to wait until after the main quest.

Just a shame it was as interesting as watching cement set. Which is the problem with most "true" (i.e. anally-retentive) RPGs. IMNSHO of course... :p

Totally disagree, you tell me another game with thte same open endedness that Oblivion can offer and how wasy it is to mod to add even more content.

I've completed the main quest and i swear its more than one person who says it. Theres a woman in a house in Bruma who is terribly moody, but shes one of those characters who only become unconscious. There has been other random people who i just walked past who said it. They got what was coming to them. :p

Yeah if you just want A-B game there are plenty of FPS about. I like the ability to "do what you like, when you like" similar to FF 7, there were quite a few sub missions. Not in a massive way like Oblivion, but same principle.

Diablo has linear plot, very very boring.

if you label RPG as the older stuff then Oblivion is in a different category.
however Oblivion is an RPG and it's depth goes as far as you want to take it.
I maintain it's set the bar for rpg standards.
Until it's overall content of characters/world/lore and of course graphical wow is overtaken then it remains the RPG to beat.
lets see who else here cares to agree with you?

I also didn't find Oblivion very fun. I used to think that I liked RPG's but I've found that I really prefer adventure games a bit more. I like storylines and plots.....for example one great adventure game I loved was Dreamfall: the longest journey...I wish there were more games like that released.

I think there are two types of "gamers" One where you're told where to go- in a linear plot (you need to go here, can't do anything else first) and other is free to roam type of gamer. I think because in Oblivion it's pretty "open" people don't want to explore new quests for themselves. ie walk into a house, talk to woman and find her husband is missing. If you never talk to her, and do the quests that are handed to you you'll never find out/do the side-quest. Linear story is boring

Seconded, i hardly did the main quest at all, mainly theives guild as i loved stealing things  :p

I played Oblivion to death. So much so that I thought I hated it. Then I went back to playing action adventure and linear FPS, and realised that I actually cannot play linear games any more.

The only games I can play are freeform games like Oblivion and GTA.

I load up Dreamfall, Prince of Persia, Halo2, etc, then I am at the last place I was last time and I have to solve the exact same puzzle before I switched off.

Where as with GTA or Oblivion I can start it up and go on a rampage if I want. Or go for a walk/drive around the countryside to see what is there. Attempt a quest or two in the process.

Free form games that have open gameplay at the way of the future. Linear games are people who never want to stray off the beaten path. Virtual tourists on the guided tour. Yawn.
