Oblivion on the PS3

Not really. There is talk of some shader enhancements, but a patch which implements this is being released for the 360 and probably the PC as well.

The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can't be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat.

Looks as tho the PS3 version will be slightly more enhanced than the 360 version.

Hope the 360 patch is released soon.

Source? And you work for Sony? :D

I find this hard to believe, especially with loading for dungeons because DVD drive on xbox 360 reads the data off disc faster than blu-ray on PS3 and you need more data to look more enhanced than 360 version.

Itll probably be tweaked, i.e faster loading times etc..

Personally i found it pretty boring after a while :o

Yeah i gotta agree on both counts lol

The loading times will be better, some better textures and i think it comes with knights of the nine but i could be wrong.

Can't you load on parts of data to the PS3 so it loads games quicker? swear i saw an option similar on my mates PS3

Some do no caching.
Some games do a forced swap file, like RFOM (500Meg) and VF5 (2Gig)
Some games give you the option of installing some eg RR7But Ninja Gaiden sigma will allow, no install, partial install or full install.

Its quite common knowledge that they have duplicated some data on the bluray disks in order to speed up access and load times. Although some reports are now stating that the level of this has been exaggerated.

I suspect that there will be little difference in appearance between the PS3 and the 360 version after the patch has been applied.

We've talked about this before.

On one of the latest 1up shows they actually felt the load times were longer on the PS3 though I think they went on to see prove they're pretty much the same.

They got round the long blu ray disk speed by repeating common data throughout the disk.

During the development they worked on a new shaders for distance. This part of code is actually platform neutral so they're going to push it as patch for the 360 and PC at some point.

IGN: How different will this version be from the others? If I've played this before, is there a reason to play it again on the PS3?

Todd Howard: Our goal is always to make the game look and feel consistent across all platforms. We design the game we want to make and then make that game available on as many platforms as possible. So, it's the same base game as was released on PC/ 360. The PS3 is benefiting from us continuing to develop our core technology that drives all our Elder Scrolls games. Some of that is noticeable on the screen -- like all the new graphic shaders -- and some isn't. The best examples are those new shaders we have for how "near detail" and "far detail" blend together on the landscape. You no longer have a harsh line cutting across the two levels, they blend together seamlessly and the distant detail and land looks much nicer.

I'd imagine the two versions will look very similar as they haven't changed the textures or basic shaders and both consoles have the same amount of memory (360 has slightly more because of reserved OS sizes).

The only difference now is whether you want to play Shivering Isles. It's out March 27th for PC and 360 but they've not announced a release date for the PS3 yet. Another console difference is whether you want rumble. Six-axis is not supported.

Oblivion for the PS3 is enhanced more so than the 360 version due to the developers taking advantage of the hardware. Which is why the PS3 version will be a better version than the 360 version. Both will have the shader opt and Texture opt tho.

In all honesty. Neither will be a patch on the PC version tho :p
